Tasmania: Broken leg sours Wells clan's day
By Adam Williams, June 23, 2021 - 12:25 PM

The Wells clan was on fire early at Devonport last Sunday with Leon, Dean and Trent preparing a winning double and apprentice Chloe notching her third career win but their day was soured when Chloe took a tumble in the seventh event.
Her mount, Gee Gee Devonboy, appeared to be tightened for room between runners when he dislodged the four-kilo claimer, the fall leaving her with a fractured femur.
It took ambulance staff approximately 40 minutes to secure Chloe, who had only begun her career last month, before she could be taken to hospital. The delay caused the last race on the program to be abandoned.
She had earlier been successful in the maiden/Class 1 plate over 1880 metres, coming from the rear with a well-timed run aboard veteran trainer Vern Poke’s charge Sizzkye.
The training team opened their account with former Victorian Dargo, who took the benchmark 78 handicap over 1880 metres after enjoying a one-out, one-back trail under Siggy Carr. The Wellses later combined with Dianne Parish to take the benchmark 60 handicap over 1150 metres with Lady Joker, who finished off strongly from midfield.
Carr was the standout hoop at the meet as she was also successful on the Gary White-prepared roughie Master Truffles, who proved too strong for his maiden rivals over 1150 metres despite racing wide on speed.
The win wasn’t unexpected by all, however, with the previously unplaced Moshe gelding firming from $101 to start a $61 chance.
Adam Trinder shared training honours with Team Wells. His pair of winners was headed by promising three-year-old Michbar, who came again under vigorous riding by Brendon McCoull after being clearly headed to take the benchmark 66 handicap over 1009 metres.
The lightly raced Whittington gelding has now won three times from seven appearances.
Trinder made it a running double with Bon Hoffa filly Cheeky One following up her maiden win with a Class 1 success over 1350 metres, enjoying a nice trail just off the pace under in-form apprentice Erica Byrne Burke.
