Strathalbyn-based trainer Andrew Clarken appears to have a nice juvenile in I Am Bene who won on debut over 1200 metres at Gawler last Saturday.
A daughter of I Am Invincible, I Am Bene started the hot favourite under Paul Gatt and scored a clearcut victory. Gatt was full of praise for the filly, predicting she wouldn’t be out of place in stakes company during the coming Adelaide autumn carnival.
Opperman shines again
Jacob Opperman continued his good form with a running double at Gawler.
His first winner was Kungka Maru for Ryan Balfour and he followed that with a victory aboard Great Leveller for Jon O’Conner.
Ryan Balfour had two winners on the card, with Fighting McLaren (ridden by Jason Holder) scoring in benchmark 68 handicap company over 1200 metres.
Wong going well
Apprentice Ellis Wong is another young rider in good form. He teamed up with trainer Nicole Irwin and her seven-year-old gelding Chromium was impressive winning a maiden race over 1506 metres.
What a warrior!
Sue and Jason Jaensch’s Victory Bandit came from midfield position to win nicely over 2106-metre race at Gawler but the real eye-catcher of the race was the run of the old marvel Flow Meter, who came from last to run second.
Jointly prepared at Murray Bridge by John Hickmott and Carina Riggs, the 12-year-old gelding was having his 184th start. He has now had 18 wins, 24 seconds, 26 thirds and has earned $743,785.
Two each
Claudia Lions and Ryan Hurdle each picked up a double at Port Lincoln last Sunday.
Lions won on the Daryl Carrison-prepared I Got Strings and Grant Kluske’s Utah Joe.
Hurdles winners were Alpha Raider for Heather Lehmann and Diamonds Are for Megan Gillespie.
