SA: Big boy misfires, Reign reigns
By Peter Neall, August 16, 2022 - 10:59 AM

Stable flag-bearer Behemoth might have disappointed in his bid for a Spring Stakes hat-trick, but Goolwa trainer David Jolly still had plenty to smile about after last Saturday’s Group 3 Morphettville feature.
Coming off a benchmark 86 win at Murray Bridge, Jolly’s second string Calypso Reign ($13) came from midfield under Kayla Crowther to score his first black-type win at start number 26.
Behemoth, resuming from a spell, started the $2.70 favourite but lost ground at the start and was never in the hunt, finishing 11th. Jolly is now thinking twice about taking the gelding to Melbourne to contest the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.
As for Calypso Reign, Jolly said he was happy with the run and will consider taking the six-year-old Barbados gelding to Melbourne.
Treble for Hurdle
Jockey Ryan Hurdle surged to an early lead in the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership with a treble at the Morphettville meeting.
Hurdle brought up his first winner when the John Hyam-trained mare Born To Run ($6) swooped from the rear to win the 1100-metre maiden plate at her seventh start.
Hurdle brought up his second winner when Ziggi Rocks ($16-$10) won the benchmark 60 over 1600 metres, giving trainer Garret Lynch the first of three winners for the weekend. It was the gelding’s first win in almost a year and his first since joing Lynch from the NSW stable of Mark Mason.
Hurdle completed his treble when the five-year- old Saville ($8) won the benchmark 60 over 1100 metres, giving the newly formed training partnership of Greg Lesnikowski and Ryan Hannemann their second winner in four days.
The Morphettville treble took Hurdle to four wins for the Adelaide season, two clear of Jess Eaton, Jason Holder, Lachlan Neindorf and Ben Price. Eaton and Stacey Callow (see below) are one behind Hurdle on three winners after Wednesday’s Morphettville Parks meeting.
Lynch went on to train a winning double at Port Augusta on Sunday with Maid in Milan ($10) in an 1100-metre benchmark 56 and Harbouring ($5) in a benchmark 56 over 1867 metres. Stacey Metcalfe and apprentice Stacey Callow were the winning riders.

Riding at Morphettville for the first time under race conditions, apprentice Stacey Callow brought up a treble on the Parks track on Wednesday.
Here first two winners were trained by her master, Jon O’Connor — Covered Call ($5) in the 1550-metre Class 2 handicap and Run And Tell ($2.15 favourite) in a benchmark 54 of 1400 metres.
Her other winner was the Phillip Stokes-prepared Trumpsta ($3.90), winner of a benchmark 54 of 1950 metres.
