SA: Dreams from clouds to nab Nitschke
By Peter Neall, April 22, 2024 - 7:37 PM

Accomplished Flemington horseman Nick Ryan may have a more-than-useful filly on his books after Material Dreams scored an exciting win in the listed H.C. Nitschke Stakes over 1400 metres on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Material Dreams ($4) came from near last to score a half-head win over another Flemington filly, the Danny O’Brien-trained $3.20 favourite Miss Aria.
Material Dreams, the first stakes winner for dual Group 2 winner Lean Mean Machine, now has five wins from 10 starts and there could be more black type for her over the coming Adelaide carnival.
The win was the first leg of a double for jockey Jacob Opperman, who was back in the winner’s circle after last-start winner Jazz Affair ($4.80 favourite) took a benchmark 68 handicap over 1400 metres.
The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained Jazz Affair ran on from worse than midfield to beat Easy Campese by almost two lengths.
Two for Todd
Todd Pannell continued his drive to the top of the Adelaide  jockeys list with a double at the Parks meeeting, combining with co-trainers Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea in both wins.
The trio kicked off with last-start winner Episodic ($4.80), who came from the second half of the field to win a Class 1 handicap over 1250 metres.
Pannell, Clarken and O’Shea completed their double when Sweetened ($5.50) won a benchmark 72 over 1250 metres.
Pannell’s double took him to 31 Adelaide wins for the season, third behind Jake Toeroek (39) and Jason Holder (35).
The wins capped off a memorable week for O’Shea, whose partner and fellow trainer Ashton Downing gave birth to a baby girl, Audry Anna.
Rochelle on a roll
It was a productive weekend for Port Augusta-based apprentice Rochelle Milnes, who followed a double at the Morphettville Parks card with a winner at the season-opening meeting on her home track last Sunday.
Milnes first winner at Morphettville was the Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle-trained Magic Max ($4), came from last to win a 1000-metre special-conditions handicap.
Milnes became the 19th hoop to ride the five-year-old gelding in his 33-start career. His five wins have come under five hoops — Damian Lane, Madison Lloyd, Lachlan Neindorf, Jake Toeroek and Milnes.
Combining with trainer Travis Doudle, Milnes completed her double when Sunzou ($2.80 favourite) led all the way in the 1000-metre benchmark 64.
Her winner at the Port meeting was Evening Bride ($11) in a benchmark 60 handicap over 1396 metres for her co-masters, John Dunn and Krystal Bishop.
Gawler co-trainers Darren Magro and Aimee Bush took the points at the Port Augusta meeting with a race-to-race double, scoring with Miss Diamantina ($8.50) in a maiden plate of 1100 metres and Badiss ($3.30) in a benchmark 56 over 1600 metres.
Apprentices Felicity Atkinson and Nichola Yuen were the winning riders.
Princess reigns
Bordertown trainer Lindsay Cadzow was all smiles last Saturday after landing his first winner at Morphettville — Sharma Princess ($19), who came from midfield to score over 2250 metres in 0-64 company.
It was Cadzow’s 40th winner overall and his second at metro level, after $101 pop Wurlies Lastchance at Murray Bridge in August 2021.

Chelsea scores
Strathalbyn-based Chelsea Cahill, wife of dual licence-holder Shayne Cahill, trained her first winner on Wednesday when apprentice Alana Livesey guided ex-Alice Springs mare L’Esperance Rock ($4.80) to an effortless win in 0-54 company over 1405 metres at Mount Gambier.
