For 150 years the countless triumps and tragedies that are synonymous with the running of the Cup each year have formed part of our national identity.
To mark the 150th running, we present the two greatest horses to have won The Melbourne Cup

The most famous horse in the world at the time - won the 1930 Melbourne Cup as the shortest priced favourite in the race's history.
He was hidden away in Geelong before the event after an attempt was made to shoot him, only emerging an hour before the start of the cup.

The great mare Makybe Diva achieved what no other horse had, becoming the first to claim three consecutive wins.
Makybe Diva is the highest stakes earner in Australasian horse racing history, with winnings of more than AU$14.5 million retired after winning her 3rd Cup, in 2005.
