Wimmera: Nev nabs Wyche Cup
By Josh Miller, November 2, 2021 - 12:07 PM

The field for last Saturday’s Elders Mt Wycheproof Cup looked an even one, but an explosive burst in the home straight from Bendigo seven-year-old Don’t Make Me Wait made it a one-act affair.
The $15 chance, only horse in work for veteran trainer Neville Kennedy, was given a patient ride by John Keating, but exploded in the straight to record a 2½-length win.
It was a fitting crescendo to a fantastic card which saw full fields do battle on an excellent racing surface.
Cracking card
The Wimmera cup circuit continues with the Ararat Gold Cup this Sunday. The $70,000 feature headlines a program that also includes the Ararat Bowl ($80,000) and a competitive undercard, making it the richest spring meeting in the region.
One of the most intriguing events will be the 3800-metre Jericho Cup heat, a qualifyier for the 4600-metre war of attrition at Warrnambool on November 28.

Dean dominates, Bobbin up
It was another successful week for Wimmera participants, with winners everywhere from Morphettville to Mortlake.
Leading hoop Dean Yendall had a day out at the Mortlake Cup meeting last Sunday, steering four of the day’s seven winners.
Horsham-based Yendall started brightly by winning the opener, then went bang late in the program with the last three winners to cap off a clinical day.
The previous day Stawell trainer Andrew Bobbin tasted metropolitan success with his six-year-old mare Riotous Mischief ($2.35 favourite).
Border-hopping Bobbin loaded just one runner on the float for Adelaide but it was well worth the trip when the daughter of Casino Prince won a benchmark 68 at Morphettville.
The win completed a hat-trick for Riotous Mischief after wins at Mildura and Ballarat earlier in October.
Hope you got on
It was fill-up for followers of this coulmn at Mortlake last Sunday, with the first two winners on the card declared as horses to follow.
Tom Dabernig’s Launch Pad won the opening event by a stunning 10 lengths at an odds-on quote, parlaying into Doug Whitworth’s Onemoredance taking out race two at a more attractive starting price of $13. Long may it continue.
