Central Victoria: Punters' pain as Kazoom goes boom
By Paul Egan, February 8, 2022 - 6:10 PM

Local trainer George Osborne threw a spanner in the works for quaddie punters on last Saturday’s Woodend Cup card at bet365 Park Kyneton when Kazoom won the second leg at $31.
The price was understandable given the rising 12-year-old was coming off four unplaced runs at the picnics when he tackled the L&G Sheppard & Sons Kyneton 0-58 Handicap (1850m).
Ridden by Robbie Downey, Kazoom sprouted wings in the straight to get up by a short half-head from Pride Of Kinross ($9) with $3.80 favourite Miss Charlee Lyn a further 1¾ lengths away third.
Kazoom, raced by Osborne and long-time stable client Alex Babauskis, has now won 13 races with 17 minor placings from his 96 starts, the last 27 of them with Osborne.
He’s earned $240,255 all up.
Boho gets a break
Osborne’s fellow local trainer Mick Sell will give stable star Boho Miss ($3.70) a well earned spell after her impressive win in the following race at Kyneton — the Bobby Beare Memorial 0-58 Handicap over 1450 metres.
The four-year-old Redente mare, coming off a Benalla win on January 16 and giving rider Daniel Stackhouse the second leg of a winning double, beat Big Darryl ($2.90 favourite) by a half-head with Clever George ($26) third.
“It was a big run as she dwelt at the start and was three wide for a lot of the journey,” Sell said.
Boho Miss was bred by Sell’s long-time mate, Euroa resident Gary Parkinson, who races the mare with former three-club VFL star Vin Catoggio and Catoggio’s wife Vicky and brother Laurie among others.
The mare now has two wins and four minor placings from 14 starts.
The first leg of Stackhouse’s double came in the day’s feature, the time-honoured Massey Ferguson Woodend Cup (1850m), on the Patrick Payne-trained three-year-old Wordsmith gelding The Nephew.
Don dashes clear
Seymour’s Don Dwyer now has a lead of eight on the Victorian picnic trainers’ premiership after the win of Dishy’s at Woolamai last Saturday.
Dwyer has saddled up 12 winners on the picnic circuit since January 1.
Follow these …
King Of Memphis — A newcomer to the Alicia Macpherson stable, the four-year-old Puissance De Lune gelding drew 14 barrier at Benalla recently and covered a heap of ground but kept fighting on for second to $2.90 favourite Peribaldo.
Munsa Magic — There were very similar circumstances later on the same Benalla card for the Stephen Brown-trained Poet’s Voice gelding. He drew wide (11) and came from the rear of the field, hitting the lead about 100 metres out, only to go down by a half-head to the well backed Bluejack ($3.80 favourite). Ultra-consistent, he deserves a win.
Happy Thursdays
Kilmore races next on Thursday February 24, then Kyneton and Kilmore will race on alternating Thursdays through March, with Kyneton kicking off on March 3.
