SA: Stakes sweep sees Jake lengthen lead
By Peter Neall, April 3, 2023 - 3:01 PM

Jockey Jake Toeroek further strengthened his grip on the Adelaide jockeys’ title when he swept last Saturday’s black-type double at Morphettville on two Mornington-trained horses.
Toeroek landed his first winner when the Cliff Brown-trained Headwater filly Little Miss Kubi ($7.50) beat the older horses to take the listed Manihi Classic (1100m).
Little Miss Kubi sat one off the pace before striding clear to beat the Shane and Cassie Oxlade-trained last-start Morphettville winner Queman ($3.40) by almost a length, with Tycoon Humma ($17) finishing third for John McArdle and Zac Spain.
Toeroek landed his second feature win of the day when As Time Goes By ($4 favourite) won the listed Clare Lindop Stakes over 1600 metres for three-year-old fillies.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained As Time Goes By came from worse than midfield for a narrow win over the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Party Princess ($12).
Toeroek’s double took him to 33 Adelaide wins for the season, five clear of second-placed Lachlan Neindorf.
Jason brings anniversary joy
Jason Holder, who had to settle for second on Party Princess in the Clare Lindop, nevertheless had a productive afternoon, bringing up the first leg of a double when last-start winner Pearl Adios ($13) came from last to win the Croser Handicap (1600m) for three-year-old colts and geldings.
The win added to a joyous day for co-trainer Leon Macdonald and wife Pam as they were celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary.
Holder landed his second winner when Crown Mint ($16) took the benchmark 62 handicap over 2000 metres.
Giving co-trainers Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle the second leg of a double, Crown Mint ran on from better than midfield to beat Mojo Classic by almost two lengths.
Richards and Moyle earlier took the Peter Elberg Funerals Handicap (1050m), a benchmark 70 and second heat of the SA Sprint Series, with $3.60 favourite Magic Max, ridden by stable apprentice Lachlan Neindorf.
Fire up
Ex-Northern Territorian Jess Gleeson notched her first winner since moving her stable to Bendigo in February when Prairie Fire won the benchmark 64 special-conditions handicap over 1100 metres at Morphettville.
Prairie Fire ($8) led all the way, giving apprentice Ellis Wong the first leg of a weekend double.
The following day at Gawler, riding for his masters, Gary and Nichole Searle and Brianna Callanan, Wong took a 1200-metre maiden on Tosen Water ($3).
Another Clever cup coup
Congratulations to Mount Gambier trainer Trevor White on winning his second Mount Gambier Gold Cup in a row when Clever Man ($2.60 favourite) took out the 2050-metre event last Friday.
Bringing up the first leg of a race-to-race double for apprentice Zoe Lloyd, Clever Man came with a late run in the straight to score by half a length.
Clever Man carried 56.5kg after Lloyd’s three-kilo claim, 2.5kg more than he carried to win the same race last year.
Lloyd’s second winner was the Jamie Opperman-trained Thanasi ($5.50 favourite) in a 1400-metre benchmark 54 handicap.
The father-daughter team of trainer Wayne and jockey Kate Walters scored a race-to-race double at Mount Gambier with Look Suave ($8.50) in a maiden plate over 1800 metres and Melissa Kate ($2.45 favourite) in a benchmark 58 handicap over 1200 metres.
Easter feast
While the Saturday/Monday Oakbank carnival is the main attraction, there will plenty to do on the racing scene in SA over Easter. The Clare Valley Racing Club races on Saturday while it’s Penola Cup day on Sunday with the feature over 1700 metres.
