Brendon McCoull had just three mounts at Hobart last Sunday but that was enough for him to notch his second treble in as many weeks.
He accomplished the feat in the first three races on the card, kicking off with the Shaun Nichols-prepared Sh’bourne Rebel, who raced on pace throughout in taking the benchmark 76 handicap over 1600 metres.
He next teamed with Adam Trinder to take the maiden plate over the same trip with Hewie, who charged home from worse than midfield to arrive right on the line.
McCoull rounded out his trio of victors with Imogen Miller’s sparingly raced three-year-old Adachi, who was able to cross from a middle draw and lead throughout in the open-age maiden plate over 1100 metres first up from a nine-month break.
The 14-time Tasmanian jockeys’ premiership winner took the front in the race for this year’s title with his treble at Devonport the previous weekend and has now notched 45 wins for the season at the healthy strike rate of 25.3 per cent.
He’s four wins clear of Siggy Carr and five ahead of David Pires in the search for his first premiership in nine years.
Gary White took training honours at last Sunday’s meeting with a brace of wins headed by the heavily backed I’m Krupt ($2.80-$2 favourite), who did it tough in taking the Class 1 handicap over 1200 metres after being posted wide throughout under 1.5kg claimer Lizzie Annells.
White completed his double with Jackjack, who came from worse than midfield under Ismail Toker to take the Class 1 handicap over 1400 metres first up from a break.
The gelded son of Unusual Suspect took 26 starts to clear maiden ranks but has now won two of his past three appearances.
Toker also went on to complete a double, combining with John Blacker to take the final event on the card, a benchmark 60 handicap over 1100 metres, with his in-form mare Dawn Eagle, who finished off strongly to notch her second successive win.
