Trainer John Keys and hoop David Pires were the standout performers at Hobart last Sunday with three winners each.
They combined for two of those successes, led off by lightly raced four-year-old Cartoon Graveyard, who came from just off the pace to clear maiden ranks over 1200 metres at his fifth attempt.
The gelded son of Turffontein is set to back up over the same route this weekend in Class 1 company and looks a chance for the double with any luck from an awkward draw.
Keys’s and Pires’s other combined win came via Londiani, who led throughout in the Class 1 handicap over 1600 metres to notch his first success at start number 12.
Keys then made it a running double with Sunset Gun, who overcame a drift in betting ($12-$16) to score a strong on-pace win in the benchmark 68 handicap over the same route under 1.5kg claimer Chelsea Baker.
All three of Keys’s winners were having their first outing for the stable, having previously been prepared by Scott Brunton.
Pires combined with Keys’s daughter Tegan for his other victor, Royal Scotch, who enjoyed a box-seat trail from the inside gate before proving too strong in the maiden plate over 1400 metres.
Pires and Tegan Keys were to travel to Caulfield this weekend with Tassie’s top galloper, The Inevitable, to tackle the $750,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes over 1400 metres.
However, the gelded son of Dundeel drew awkwardly in gate 11 of 15 and will be saved for another day.
