Wangoom dream alive with Niccolite

Patrick Ryan is chasing a start  in Warrnambool’s Wangoom Handicap with  Niccolite following her home track victory last week.
Having her first run for Ryan, Niccolite was impressive defeating Tequila Storm over 1000 metres.
Warrnambool-based Ryan said the mare would need to score again to secure a spot in the time-honoured Wangoom.
“I’d love it if she got to that race,” the trainer said. “She would come in on the minimum weight and be mighty competitive.
“She loves wet tracks, too, and I think we’re due for rain before the (May) carnival.
“Grahame Begg used to train this mare  for my good mate Rob Salter. They thought a change in environment might help her and it looks like it has done wonders.”
Ryan,  who won the 2008 Warrnambool Cup with Video Star, said his handy stayer Ferago is on track for a start in the Cup this year following his fourth placing in the Mount Gambier Cup recently.
’Bool boys bag doubles
Aaron Purcell and Symon Wilde shared training honours at Stawell on Sunday.
Both had doubles on the eight-race program. Purcell won with Stylish Enuff and Wilewink while Wilde was successful with Star Testymony and Ice Symphony.
Purcell said Wilewink, who won a restricted flat race over 2700 metres, is  destined for a jumps career.
“He’ll run in a maiden hurdle at the Warrnambool May carnival. He has  schooled up well over the jumps.”
Stylish Enuff made it back-to-back victories when winning a Benchmark 64 with apprentice jockey Tayla Childs in the saddle.
“We were confident he was in for a good prep because he trialled up well at the start of it,” said Purcell.
“That’s two wins for Tayla on him now ... I think she’s a very under-rated jockey.”
Stylish Enuff took his record to six wins from 28 starts and the six-year-old has passed $155,000 in stakemoney.
Turbo back on track
Trainer Jane Baker says she has her fingers crossed that the win by Turbo Toronado at Warracknabeal last Saturday was not a “flash in the pan”.
Turbo Toronado was having his fifth start for the Warrnambool-based trainer when he defeated Atahu over 1000 metres.
Baker revealed she had purchased Turbo Toronado for $3500 in an on-line auction.
“It’s just taken us a bit of time to work things out with him,” she said.
“He came to us in great order from the Hayes stable. I worked out he had a couple of issues with his back and it looks like we’ve got on top of that. He’s a lovely type of horse. I originally thought we might get him out to 1600 metres but I’m starting to think he’s going to be better suited kept at sprint distances.” Turbo Toronado may have his next run at Ararat on April 13.
