It was a night of doubles at Launceston on Wednesday, with regular fly-in hoop Anthony Darmanin and apprentices Lauryn Bingley and Jackson Radley all notching a brace of wins.
Radley nabbed the first double of his career within the first three races on the card, kicking off with his master John Blacker’s lightly-raced three-year-old Lontano who cleared maiden ranks over 1200 metres at his third start.
The gelded son of Needs Further was a marked drifter in betting, easing from $6.50 to $10, but proved too strong for his rivals despite facing the breeze.
Radley completed his double on the Rowan Hamer-trained Mightymaxi who camped just off the speed before shedding his maiden tag at start number nine in the Maiden/Class 1 plate over 2100 metres.
Bingley’s first success came via the Tanya Hanson and Kyle Maskiell-prepared Tricky Mikki who pressed forward from a wide draw to settle outside the leader before digging deep in the drive to the line to just hold off fast-finishing race favourite Surely Special in the class 1 handicap over 1400 metres.
The 3kg claimer later combined with Angela Brakey to lead throughout on her charge General Assembly in the Benchmark 68 over 1600 metres.
It was the gelded son of More Than Ready’s second win from his past three attempts as he also led throughout at huge odds at Sandown on the March 6.
Darmanin opened his account on the Glenn Steveson-trained Lord Whitegate who enjoyed a gun trail just behind the leaders before skipping clear early in the straight and holding on by a half-length from Weldborough who hit the line hard from midfield.
In-form trainer Gary White provided Darmanin with his second success with smart sprinter/miler Just A Tribute taking the open handicap over 1400 metres.
The Street Boss gelding was forced three wide without cover midrace but kept finding in the run to the line to score at his first run back from a freshen.
The Victorian based Darmanin is right on target to notch his first Tasmanian jockeys premiership as he’s now ridden 48 winners for the season, 11 clear of his nearest rival Codi Jordan.
