Australian racing history was made on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday when all nine winners at a metropolitan mainland track were ridden by female jockeys.
Kayla Crowther and apprentices Alana Livesey and Rochelle Milnes led the way, riding doubles.
Caitlin Jones and apprentices Maggie Collett and Felicity Atkinson were the other winning riders.
Crowther was first in the winner’s enclosure when three-year-old filly Nicish won a 1300-metre maiden plate, leading all the way to give trainer Phillip Stokes the first leg of a double of his own.
Coming off a pair of placings at Gawler, Nicish started a $3.30 second favourite.
Crowther’s second winner, Episodic ($3.80), came as the result of a pick-up ride from the indisposed Todd Pannell. The four-year-old mare took out a benchmark 64 over 1250 metres to complete a hat-trick for co-trainers Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea.
O’Shea says the stable is hoping to get to stakes race with the the four-year-old Tavistock mare.
Stokes landed the second leg of an early double when Jenkins ($6.50) swooped from last to win a benchmark 74 over 1550 metres with Jones aboard.
Livesey opened her account when she guided Easy Campese ($1.90 favourite) to a win in a restricted 1400-metre handicap.
Prepared at Murray Bridge by one of the state’s up-and-coming young trainers in Sarah Rutten, Easy Campese ran on from better than midfield to blow his rivals away by 3½ lengths.
Livesey completed her double on five-year-old gelding Keep Reading ($7.50) in the benchmark 80 handicap over 1000 metres.
First up from a spell, Keep Reading gave Richard and Chantelle Jolly the second leg of a two-state double after the Michael Dee-ridden Losesomewinmore had taken a benchmark 70 over 1100 metres at Flemington.
Milnes and Michael Hickmott, who trains out of his Wellington property, shared in a running double in races four and five at the parks meeting. Storyteller ($3.80) worked home from last for a narrow win in a 1000-metre Class 2 then Exalted Fire ($6) led all the way in a 1950-metre benchmark 76.
Collett did her bit for the all-female cause day when she guided the Daniel Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray-trained Hot Off ($8.50) to an all-the-way win in the 1300-metre rating 64.
Finally, congratulations to apprentice Felicity Atkinson on riding her first metropolitan winner when the Chris Bieg-trained Peacemaker ($18) came from well back to take out a rating 64 handicap over 1550 metres, completing the women’s sweep.
Doubles all round
Honours at Strathalbyn last Sunday were shared between the stables of David Jolly and John Hickmott/Carina Riggs, and between jockeys Jake Toeroek and Caitlyn Munro.
The winners for Jolly and claiming apprentice Munro were Undercover Agent ($8.50) in a 1200-metre maiden plate and Talkin’ Italian ($6.50) in a benchmark 56 over 1200 metres.
Hickmott and Riggs scored with Star Studded Belle ($21) in a maiden plate over 1350 metres and Canidae ($4.20 favourite) in a rating 56 handicap over the same trip. Apprentice Jade Doyle and senior jockey Samuel Payne were the winning riders.
