Talented apprentices Chloe Wells and Erica Byrne Burke took riding honours at Devonport last Sunday with a double each.
Wells combined with her uncle Trent to take the opening event on the card, a maiden plate over 1150 metres, with It’s Jagger Time.
The lightly raced three-year-old Holler gelding had to face the breeze but was still able to wear down race favourite Sky Land, who tried valiantly to lead throughout.
Wells’s second win came via the Rowan Hamer-trained Quicken Up, who also raced on pace throughout before notching her second successive win in benchmark 60 company over the Devonport 1150 metres.
Byrne Burke’s first success was for her master, Adam Trinder, whose charge Corsa Veloce enjoyed a box-seat trail before clearing maiden ranks over 1350 metres first up from an eight-month break.
Byrne Burke went on to complete her double on John Keys-trained roughie Goddess Of Rock, who finished off hard from worse than midfield to take the final event on the card, a class 1 handicap over 1650 metres.
The daughter of Toorak Toff shed her maiden tag in similar fashion first up but had failed to feature in her two subsequent runs and paid $60 on the local tote, ensuring a juicy quaddie dividend.
Stick with Mistruth
Stuart Gandy has his boom filly Geegees Mistruth engaged on Friday night at The Valley, where she will tackle the $200,000 Group 3 Scarborough Stakes over 1200 metres.
The daughter of Wordsmith had to settle further back than normal from an awkward alley before hitting the line hard in the Quezette Stakes over 1100 metres first up but has drawn better on this occasion, which should enable her to take up an on-speed position.
Leading hoop Ben Melham sticks and Gandy’s charge is currently the $5.50 second favourite in a wide-open market.
