SA: Gluyas eyes another derby for the Gurus

Andrew Gluyas has his sights on Group 1 classic glory after Goldrush Guru’s win in the listed Hill Smith Stakes over 1800 metres at Morphettville last Saturday.
The $1.55 favourite came from midfield under stable jockey Jason Holder to score a comfortable 2¼-length win in the Hill Smith, an established lead-up to Saturday week’s Victoria Derby.
Goldrush Guru, a son of US Triple Crown hero American Pharoah, is out of the Medaglia D’Oro mare Glam Guru, who ran second in the 2017 Hill Smith then second in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) but never raced beyond that trip.
She was trained by Gluyas in partnership with his father-in-law, Leon Macdonald.
Goldrush Guru’s granddam, Glory Guru, is a three-quarter sister to the Macdonald-trained 1998 AJC Derby winner Gold Guru
Gluyas said Goldrush Guru, the second listed winner of his solo training career, would likely go straight to the 2500 metres of the derby.
Goldrush Guru’s win completed a running double for Holder, who’d earlier won a benchmark 66 for three-year-olds over 1200 metres on Royal Majesty ($6) for another local trainer in Chris Bieg.
Gluyas went on to complete a double of his own with five-year-old gelding Pearl Adios ($21) in a benchmark 70 over 1200 metres.
That win made it a double for Gluyas stable apprentice Taylor Johnstone, who’d earlier won a 1050-metre benchmark 78 handicap on Winning Revolution ($18) for Jon O’Connor.
It was a big 24 hours for Johnstone, who’d ridden the 100th winner of her career at Launceston the night before.
Boy bounces back
Well done to apprentice Zoe Lloyd on riding her first city winner — France’s Boy ($61) in the 0-68 Sportsbet Handicap (1600m).
Trained at Murray Bridge by John Hickmott and Carrina Riggs, France’s Boy led all the way to notch his 18th win at start number 128.
Now 11, the Equiano gelding began his career in a three-year-olds’ maiden on the same track on January 28, 2017.
He turned his form around dramatically last Sunday, having been unplaced six times since winning at Morphettville over 1500 metres on July 27.
France’s Boy hadn’t beaten a runner home at either of his last two starts. Quizzed by stewards about the form turnaround, Hickmott said the stable had been doing extra work with the gelding on the uphill track at Murray Bridge, but that getting an easy lead was the main factor behind his improvement.
Treble for Teags
Teagan Voorham was the star of Monday’s meeting at Penola (postponed from last Friday), riding three of the nine winners — two of them for Murray Bridge trainer Sarah Rutten.
Voorham won a 2030-metre maiden on Hasta La Amnesty ($11) for Naracoorte’s Sue Murphy before taking the 0-54 handicap over 1270 metres on Rutten’s Mr Whitacre ($4.40) and a 0-56 over 2030 metres on Fizique ($5.50).

Dual joy for Jacob, Justin
Jacob Opperman and Justin Potter shared the riding honours at Strathalbyn on Wednesday with a double apiece.
Opperman won a 1600-metre maiden on Sazerac ($9) for Paul Carey and a 1350-metre 0-56 handicap on Falaise ($3.50 favourite) for another Murray Bridge trainer, Stuart Padman.
Potter won a 1350-metre maiden on the David Jolly-trained debutante Churchill filly Florey ($14) and a 1600-metre 0-56 handicap on the Shae Norton-trained Hobo Bob ($12).
Three-kilo claimer Zoe Lloyd made it three successive meetings with a winner when she took the fourth heat of the Montgomerie/Forrest Apprentice Series on the Judy Street-trained Dawnburst ($5).
