Glenn Stevenson was the standout performer at Wednesday night’s Launceston meeting, preparing three winners in consecutive races.
He opened his account with former Victorian Altai Warrior, who made a winning local debut in the benchmark 60 handicap over 1200 metres.
The formerly Thomas Sadler-prepared Power gelding enjoyed a nice trail midfield under Kelvin Sanderson before finishing off strongly to wear down pacemaker Stars In The Night in the concluding stages.
Stevenson next combined with Daniel Ganderton to take the Class 3 handicap over 1400 metres with Asva, who enjoyed a box-seat trail before scoring comfortably over the luckless Conundrum, who finished strongly despite being posted wide throughout.
Stevenson completed his treble with another ex-Victorian, Spring Bean, who scored a dominant on-pace win in the maiden/Class 1 plate over 2100 metres under Anthony Darmanin.
The Spill The Beans gelding has now won two of his four Tasmanian appearances and has placed on the other two occasions.
Spring Bean’s win completed a double for Darmanin, who earlier combined with Bradley Franklin to take the opening event on the card, a maiden plate over 1100 metres, with debutante Unique Eagle.
The four-year-old Alpine Eagle mare settled just off the pace before proving too strong for heavily backed favourite Uncle’s Tip.
Gandy’s girl cops visitor’s draw
Classy filly Geegees Mistruth will need plenty of luck when she rounds out her Group 1 Thousand Guineas lead-up in Saturday’s Group 3 $200,000 The Vanity at Flemington on Saturday after drawing gate 16 in the 17-horse field.
The Stuart Gandy-trained daughter of Wordsmith has been game in the placings at all three Victorian outings this term, most recently sticking on gamely after facing the breeze in the Thousand Guineas Prelude on testing ground.
Gandy’s charge will appreciate firmer going this weekend and with a good steer from Billy Egan should be playing a role in the finish again.
She looks over the odds at the current quote of $16 given that she’s on the second line of betting at $11 for the Group 1 feature on November 16.
