Western Victoria: Share to shine fresh in Valley scamper
By Tim Auld, February 24, 2025 - 3:16 PM

Young Warrnambool trainer Adam Chambers has freshened stable star Major Share ahead of his next challenge but will send the horse to the paddock as soon as the autumn rains begin to fall.
Chambers nominated Major Share for Saturday’s $175,000 VOBIS Gold Comet over 1000 metres at Flemington but is more likely to run the lightly raced four-year-old in the $130,000 Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Final at The Valley next Friday, March 7.
Major Share has won six of his eight starts, most recently a $130,000 race down the famous Flemington straight on January 18. He has only been back in light work for a few weeks following that impressive victory.
“We’ve freshened him up,” Chambers said. “He had an easy time at home for 10 days after his Flemington win. We’ve only increased his workload over the last few weeks.
“The main reason for going to the Valley is it’s an easier track there. There’s nowhere to hide down the Flemington straight.”
Chambers added that Major Share doesn’t like wet tracks but other horses in his care appreciate soft ground and will race through the winter.
“I’ll be giving him a spell once the weather breaks,” he said. “He’s no good on wet tracks.
“We’ll give him a good break. He deserves that.
“I’ve got five other horses in the stable and they all like soft tracks so I’ve got them ready to run.”
Major Share, a $75,000 buy at the Adelaide Magic Millions sales in 2022, has won $213,850 from his eight starts.
Bool sales booming
Warrnambool Racing Club is gearing up for a bumper 2025 May carnival.
Ticket sales for the three-day event, which kicks off on Tuesday April 29, are up 18 per cent on the corresponding time last year.
Club chief Luke Cann says early indications are this year’s carnival will be bigger than previous years.
“It looks like it’s going to be huge,” he said. “We’ve had a huge amount of interest from the general public and our members.
“Sales are up about 18 per cent. Normally those figures flatten out but I’d confidently say at this early stage we could probably finish about 10 per cent up. A 10-percent rise would be a huge result for the club considering the tough economic times.”
WRC was hosting the first set of jumps trials for the 2025 season as Winning Post went to press on Thursday, with the first jumps races for 2025 set down for Warrnambool on March 28, by which time Cann hopes the region has had some decent rain.
“The water levels in our dams and bores are really good and they should ensure our tracks are in the soft range for the jumps trials and races ,” he said.
“(But) I’ve got my fingers crossed we would have had good rain by March 28.”
