It could a case of catch me if you can on the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership board after apprentice Rochelle Milnes opened up an nine-win gap over her rivals with a treble on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Milnes brought up her first winner when Sebonna ($2.90-$4.60) won the benchmark 78 handicap over 2250 metres. One of three weekend winners for Murray Bridge trainer Sarah Rutten, Sebonna came from worse than midfield for a narrow but convincing win over Victorian gelding Bogues, who’d been backed in from $2.20 to start a $1.75 favourite.
Rocket Boosters ($8) gave Milnes the middle leg of her treble, coming from one off the pace to win the Class 2 handicap over 1250 metres for Stawell-based dual licence-holder Linda Meech.
Milnes completed her treble on another Victorian, four-year-old gelding Porter ($1.80 favourite), in the benchmark 86 handicap over 1400 metres.
Porter, from the Flemington stable of Danny O’Brien, came from behind the pace for a comfortable win.
Milnes now has 33 Adelaide wins for the season, with Taylor Johnstone, Kayla Crowther and Lachlan Neindorf leading the chasing pack on 24.
The day before her Morphettville Parks treble, Milnes was the toast of Port Lincoln after steering the John Dunn and Krystal Bishop-trained I Need A Drink ($7) to a successful title defence in the Port Lincoln Cup (1960m), fourth heat of the Bill Holland series.
Milnes was aboard last year when I Need A Drink completed a Port Lincoln hat-trick with victory in the local cup.
She now has a record of 10 Port Lincoln rides on the gelding for seven wins and a second. I Need A Drink is winless in six Port Lincoln starts for other jockeys.
While Milnes rode the feature winner at Port, Teagan Voorham and Connor Murtagh took the riding honours with a double apiece.
Voorham’s winners were Megasun ($10) for the Gary and Nichole Searle and Brianna Callanan in a 1350-metre maiden plate and Rubini ($8) for Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle in a benchmark 68 over 1350 metres.
Murtagh had consecutive wins on the Waylon Hornhardt-trained More Sugar ($6.60) in a 1210-metre 0-60 handicap and the Garret Lynch-trained Doctor Robert ($3.80 favourite) in 0-54 grade over 1750 metres.
Seeing doubles
Doubles were the order of the day at Penola last Sunday when jockeys Caitlin Jones, Jessica Tzaferis and Alana Livesey had two winners apiece along with trainers Sarah Rutten and Grant Young.
Jones scored on Glacies Heart ($4.60) for David Huxtable and Hotch Potch ($3.50) for Rutten, whose other winner was the Connor Murtagh-ridden Avanzo ($19).
Young and Tzaferis won with The Tank ($3.50 favourite) and Kushan Khanivale ($4.60 favourite) while Livesey notched a race-to-race double on Eagles Forever ($7.20) for James Dodgson and the Richard Wilson-trained Load And Go ($3.20 favourite).
Shiffany’s day
Strahalbyn trainer Trevor Day was rewarded for his persistence when four-year-old mare Shiffany broke through for her maiden win at start number 20 at Oakbank on Wednesday.
Punters got off to a nightmare start as Shiffany ($41-$101) stormed home to win the 1900-metre maiden under apprentice Felicity Atkinson.
Shiffany started her career with Wyong trainer Damien Lane then had four starts in SA for John Macmillan before arriving with Day at this time last year.
