SA: Aviatress soars as Jollys hit form
By Peter Neall, March 31, 2025 - 6:17 PM

Followers of the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable were rewarded at Morphettville last Saturday when the reigning premiers trained a treble headed by Aviatress in the listed Matrice Stakes (1200m).
Giving the Jolly stable’s number-one hoop, Jake Toeroek, the first leg of a double, the four-year-old Smart Missile mare started the $1.95 favourite first up from a spell.
She raced two off the pace before coming clear for a 1¾-length win, with Richard Jolly nominating the Group 3 R.N. Irwin Stakes over 1100 metres at Morphettville on April 12 as her next run. Aviatress now has six wins from 12 starts.
Earlier, the Jollys opened their account when Out Of Square ($5) swooped from the back half to win the benchmark 72 over 1050 metres, the first leg of a riding double for apprentice Taylor Johnstone.
The Jollys and Toeroek each made it three winners for the day when Star Sirius ($4.80) came from a rearward position to win the last race, a benchmark 64 over 1200 metres.
Toeroek had landed the first of his three winners when the Stuart Gower-trained Darknconfidential ($8.50) won a three-year-old colts’ and geldings’ handicap over 1600 metres.
Johnstone completed her double on the Andrew Gluyas-trained Watchme Win ($2.90 favourite) in the benchmark 70 over 1100 metres.
Stokes strikes twice
Minutes after Phillip Stokes celebrated the import Deakin winning his way into the Melbourne Cup via the listed Roy Higgins (2600m) at Flemington, the stable was again in stakes-winning mode at Morphettville when Comanche Miss ($3.50 favourite) won the listed Clare Lindop Stakes over 1600 metres.
The Lachlan Neindorf ridden Comanche Miss came from well back and will have her next start in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) on Saturday week, followed a fortnight later by a run in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m).
The streak continues
Gawler-based training partners Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor made it nine consecutive Saturdays with at least one SA metro winner when Beach Pad ($2.80) gradually improved from better than midfield to win the benchmark 64 over 2028 metres under Jason Holder.
That’s a wrap
Doubles were the order of the day at Port Lincoln’s final meeting of the season last Sunday.
Apprentice Monika Wolanin took the bookends with the Simon Drewitt-trained Hawson ($21) and The Last Dance ($5) for Darryl Carrison.
Ben Price won on the Stephen Theodore-prepared East Girl ($2.80 favourite) and the Brian Lear-trained Chef De Mission ($10).
Apprentice Feliciy Atkinson won on Sir Panama ($3.30 favourite) for Jorden McMahon and Our Divinyl ($7) for Brenton Jones.
