Goolwa trainer David Jolly has made the listed Hills Railway Stakes his own, with five-year-old gelding Volcanic Express giving him his sixth win in the 1100-metre feature at Oakbank last Saturday.
Ridden by Justin Potter, Volcanic Express ($9) came with a strong outside run from worse than midfield to beat the Sue and Jason Jaensch-trained Sir Sway.
Jolly said he would look at starting Volcanic Express in the Festival State Sprint Series Final over 1200 metres at Morphettville on Saturday week (May 3).
Easter Saturday’s other Oakbank feature, the Onkaparinga Cup (2150m), saw $4.20 favourite Sir Kingsford lead all the way for the Gawler stable of Gary and Nichole Searle and daughter Brianna Callanan. Teagan Voorham was the rider.
Triple double
Todd Pannell was on fire early on Easter Saturday, riding the first two winners — Pamiers ($2.80 favourite) for Stuart Padman in a maiden plate over 1100 metres and Up The Den ($6.50) for Michael Hickmott in a benchmark 66 over 1050 metres.
He shared the honours on the day with apprentices Felicity Atkinson and Taylor Johnstone.
Atkinson posted the first leg of a running double when Teardrop Rotation ($8.50) took out The Shillabeer (1400m) three-year-olds’ handicap for Atkinson’s master, Chris Bieg.
Atkinson completed her double on We’ve Gotta Deel ($9) in the Emmetts Country Cup (1900m) for Sue and Jason Jaensch.
Johnstone won on Rubamos ($3.90 favourite) for Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor in The Vintage (1400m) and Beauty Bound ($7) for Phillip Stokes in 0-66 company over 1050 metres.
Luck grabs cup
The Mount Gambier-based father/daughter trainer/jockey combo of Wayne and Kate Walters were all smiles after Any Luck ($2.45 favourite) emerged from the pack late to win Easter Sunday’s Penola Cup (1700m).
Garret Lynch took the training honors at Penola with two winners — Carashan Chloe ($2.05 favourite) in the 2000-metre maiden plate and Onehundred Percent ($17) in 0-56 grade over 1300 metres. Rochelle Milnes and Alysha Warren were the winning riders.
Connor Murtagh rode back-to-back winners at Penola — the Matthew Seyers-trained Collated ($6.50) in 0-56 company over 1600 metres and the Justin Pickering-trained Free Beer ($3.50 favourite) in a benchmark 66 over 1075 metres
Pickering and Murtagh were again in winning form at Oakbank on Monday when Ambello ($3.70 favourite) won in 0-66 grade over 1100 metres.
Murray Bridge trainer Stephen Theodore took the Easter Monday honours with two winners — Spirit of Flight ($3.70) and High Society Girl ($9). Stacey Metcalfe and Todd Pannell were the winning riders.
