John Blacker’s progressive mare Perola continued on her winning way in a four-year-old handicap over 1400 metres at Hobart last Sunday.
The daughter of Needs Further camped just off the pace under stable apprentice Jackson Radley before scoring a soft win over super-honest stablemate Stardarmus, who found the line nicely from the back of the field.
Perola has now won seven of her 21 appearances and placed on another six occasions.
Her win was the middle pin of a treble for Blacker and Radley. Earlier they’d combined with Lady Fern, who scored an overdue maiden win over 1200 metres, finishing off hard from midfield for a comfortable 2¼-length victory at her 14th outing.
Blacker and Radley’s final win came via Rigoletto, who scored a similarly deserved win in the Class 6 handicap over 1600 metres, having been game in defeat at his three previous outings.
Dispatch looks handy
John Keys appears to have a smart customer on his hands in Royal Dispatch, who took the day’s feature, the $50,000 3YO Autmn Classic, over 1400 metres at his Tasmanian debut.
The Ten Sovereigns gelding scored over 1600 metres on debut at Bairnsdale in March for Matt Laurie — his only previous start.
Despite facing the breeze at Hobart under Anthony Darmanin he proved too tough for the unlucky short-priced favourite Dancing Wolf, who kept finding the line despite being posted wide in the small five-horse field.
The win was the first leg of a double for Keys, who also took the benchmark 72 handicap over 1200 metres with smart sprinter Galenus.
The Magnus gelding tracked speedster Etosha throughout before wearing that galloper down in the drive to the line under the urgings of three-kilo claimer Jabez Johnstone.
It was the eight-year-old’s 12th win from 43 appearances and pushed his career earnings beyond the $400,000 mark.
