Tasmania: Brace for Blacker as Eagle swoops Wolf
By Adam Williams, May 15, 2025 - 9:47 AM

John Blacker and his stable apprentice Jackson Radley kept up  their hot run of form with another pair of winners at Hobart last Sunday, kicking off with $31 roughie High Tail Eagle, who upset short-priced favourite Dancing Wolf ($1.75) in the three-year-olds’ handicap over 1600 metres.
The Alpine Eagle gelding had placed just once from his previous eight attempts but after enjoying a gun trail behind the fave, who shared the pace, Radley angled his charge into the clear on straightening and he finished off strongly to wear the filly down in the concluding stages.
Blacker and Radley completed their double with the in-form Captain Cam, who made it four wins from his past five outings despite rising to open company and facing the breeze throughout at his first 1600-metre try.
Anthony Darmanin and Bulent Muhcu also notched a double apiece, taking the first four events on the card between them.
Darmanin was first on the board with the John Keys-trained Ashfall, who scored a tough and deserved win in the opening event on the program, a benchmark 74 handicap over 2200 metres.
He later combined with Brendan McShane to take the open-age maiden plate over 1400 metres with four-year-old Skin In The Game, who broke through at just his second appearance.
The Turffontein gelding had caught the eye hitting the line hard from the back to miss narrowly on debut but on Sunday pressed forward from a wide draw to sit outside the leader and quickly put paid to his rivals early in the straight.
The win was also the first leg of a double for McShane, who later combined with 1.5kg claimer Chloe Wells to take the Class 1 handicap over 1200 metres with Scarletti, a tough on-pace winner first up from a three-month break.
Muhcu opened his account on the Jessie Bazan-prepared debutante Live On Love, who finished hard from midfield to take the open-age maiden over 1100 metres.
Shaun Nichols’s super-honest Alpine Eagle gelding Sh’Bourne Midnight gave Muhcu his double, coming from midfield to take the benchmark 64 handicap over 1600 metres.
The lightly raced five-year-old has now won four of 11 outings and has only missed a place once.
