SA: Matt's move reaping rewards
By Peter Neall, June 24, 2025 - 11:37 AM

Apprentice Matthew Chadwick had his best day in the saddle since moving to SA late last year when he rode a back-to-back double at Morphettville last Saturday.
The former Victorian, who had his indentures transferred to Morphettville trainer Chris Bieg in December after a three-month loan period, kicked off last Saturday winning the 1800-metre benchmark 68 on nine-year-old gelding Magnetic Edge ($26) for Murray Bridge co-trainers John Hickmott and Carrina Riggs.
Chadwick completed his double on the Bieg-trained Voltage Point ($17-$11) in a benchmark 78 over 1200 metres, bringing the four-year-old from the outside gate to settle midfield before a powerful finishing burst saw him score comfortably.
A $25,000 purchase at the 2022 Adelaide Magic Millions, Voltage Point now has six wins and $257,845 from 26 starts.
Jake Toeroek shared the honours with Chadwick at Saturday’s meeting, kicking off with $2.70 favourite Starts Now in 0-64 company over 1540 metres.
Prepared by Toeroek’s partner Chantelle Jolly and her father Richard, Starts Now ran on from near last to register his his third win from 14 starts.
Toeroek landed the second leg of his double on another swooper, Fast Bubbles ($17), in a 1200-metre no-metro-wins handicap for Strathalbyn co-trainers Wayne Francis and Glen Kent.
Cicala stars
Reigning Adelaide premier trainers Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea are too far back to defend their title but look set to finish strong after a running double at the Morphettville meeting.
The Sellicks Hill stable landed its first winner with Hajra ($6.50), who came from worse than midfield under Ben Price to take  the 1050-metre benchmark 64.
Clarken and O’Shea completed their double with exciting three-year-old filly Cicala, who won the 1100-metre Class 2 under apprentice Rochelle Milnes to make it two wins from two starts.
Backed from $2.90 to start the $2.40 favourite, Cicala gave Milnes her 42nd Adelaide winner of the season, extending her premiership lead to three over fellow apprentice Taylor Johnstone, who went winless.
Early joy for Jess
Murray Bridge jockey/trainer Jessica Tzaferis may have a nice type on her hands after first-starter Kalosyni won the 1050-metre maiden plate at Morphettville. Bought online for $5500 and ridden by her trainer, Kalosyni came from better than midfield with a strong, confident run over the concluding stages to score by half a length.
A daughter of former shuttler and (UK) 2000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia, Kalosyni is a half-sister to Chicane, a six-time winner in NSW and Tasmania.
Kylie eyes cups double
Local trainer Kylie McKerlie was all smiles after the win of Ichibansan ($8) in the Squatter’s Cup (1867m), feature of last Sunday’s Port Augusta meeting.
Ichibansan came from midfield under Dylan Caboche and is a likely starter in Sunday week’s Port Augusta Cup over 2300 metres.
Caboche completed a running double on Mistnaces ($61) for another local trainer in Denis McMahon, while Sairyn Fawke took the riding honours with a treble, on Blondi’s Bombshell ($2.70 favourite) for Garret Lynch, Pirate ($1.40 favourite) for Stephen Theodore and Star Casino ($4.60) for Travis Doudle. Lynch completed a double of his own with Mohite ($2.15 favourite).
Good call
Congratulations to Sydney broadcaster turned podcaster John Tapp on being named an associate in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Dual joy for Jolly, Jake
Trainer David Jolly and jockey Jake Toeroek took the honours with a double apiece at Gawler on Wednesday.
Jolly brought won two of the three divisions of the 1200-metre benchmark 56 with The Plastics ($7.50) and Valentina Charm ($3.30 favourite). Apprentice Brooke King and Justin Potter were the winning riders.
Toeroek won for Richard and Chantelle Jolly on ex-Hong Kong galloper From The Block ($1.28 favourite) in an 1100-metre maiden plate and for Luke O’Connor on English import Placo ($2.60 favourite) in a 1500-metre Class 1. O’Connor and friends bought Placo online for $1500 after the horse failed in a jumpout for Ciaron Maher.
