Warrnambool trainer Peter Chow blew punters out of the water in the final event at Donald last Saturday when outsider Tallapoosa ($31) flew home from last for apprentice Sarah Field.
The three-year-old filly backed up her maiden win at Casterton 13 days earlier, turning widest and storming down the outside rail to win in a blanket finish to the 1206-metre 0-58 contest.
Just three-quarters-of-a-length separated the first five runners past the post in a thrilling finale to the nine-race program, Chow dropping a bomb on quaddie punters in an upset result.
The daughter of Alabama Express has two wins — both on rain-affected going — from seven starts and will surely target wet tracks for the remainder of winter, though her 62 rating makes her tricky to place next start.
Per usual
In the previous race, the Buloke Plumbing 0-58 Handicap (1006m), perennial placegetter Per Sempre ($3.10 favourite) proved a tease again for punters, collecting the runner-up cheque for the seventh time in her 15-start career.
The Charles Cassar-trained mare blew the start and settled a clear last from barrier three, held up on the bend before charging late to go down by 1¼ lengths to Cool The Jets ($3.80), who’d enjoyed the perfect run throughout.
I’d normally say Per Sempre is a runner to follow after such a run, but I fear this mare is only for the thrillseekers.
Beware Tom’s Terra
Warracknabeal is looking forward to a bumper 10-race card on Friday, big fields and competitive racing the order of the day.
One to watch early in the day is Tom Dabernig’s first-starter Terralight in race two, who debuts on the back of a solid closing effort in a recent Colac trial.
That was on heavy ground, and following some welcome rainfall in the region this week, the two-year-old daughter of Earthlight should strike similar conditions come start time.
The filly has drawn ideally in barrier three, and if she handles the occasion of race day could prove a cut above maiden grade first up.
