Tasmanian Hall of Fame trainer Barry Campbell looked to have a strong team on paper engaged at last Sunday’s Devonport meeting and he duly took the honours, preparing a trio of victors.
He opened his account with debutant Mazzini, who led under stable apprentice Lauryn Bingley before booting clear in the home straight for a super-impressive 7½-length win.
The Needs Further gelding is well related, being a full brother to his highly promising stablemate Durazzo, and was backed as if unbeatable, firming from $3.60 to start the $1.35 favourite.
Campbell’s second win came via the progressive Earendel, who notched his fourth win from six appearances in the Class 4 handicap over 1650 metres.
Also a gelded son of Needs Further, Earendel was forced to work early under Chloe Wells after missing the kick to take up a position outside leader Night People before wearing that galloper down in the drive to the line. Those two gapped their rivals.
Campbell then made it a running double with Shy Guy, who led throughout under Kelvin Sanderson in the benchmark 70 handicap over 1880 metres.
The former Chris Waller representative has now won three of his eight local appearances and been runner-up on another four occasions.
Final test
Siggy Carr’s smart sprinter Thespian Waters will have his second Victorian appearance when he tackles the $175,000 Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
The Headwater gelding made good ground from the back over 1100 metres at the same track on June 21 and will appreciate the added 100m of this weekend’s assignment.
He will again have the services of Craig Newitt and has placed at two of his three previous second-up runs.
