Horsham trainer Paul Preusker returned to form last Saturday with a winning double at Warracknabeal, kicking off with recent acquisition Struggle Street ($3.70) in 0-58 grade over 1000 metres.
Identified here as a horse to follow after a pair of impressive jumpouts, the four-year-old daughter of Street Boss made light work of her rivals to record an arrogant first-up win.
From an outside gate Linda Meech rode confidently throughout, happy to sit wide and just off the speed before moving up to challenge at the top of the straight.
The four-year-old took over soon after and under little riding stopped the clock at a brisk 58.45 seconds, more than two lengths ahead of her nearest combatant. We can continue to follow this mare through the winter months.
Preusker brought up a race-to-race double when Budjik Boy ($9.50) came from last to score over 1200 metres in the same grade.
The gelded son of Puissance De Lune won his maiden over 1600 metres at Echuca in October and Saturday’s sprint trip was thought to be short of his best.
However, an early move from jockey Jack Hill saw him in the thick of it by the halfway point, finishing powerfully in the home straight to pull away and win by 1¼ lengths.
It was the four-year-old’s second win from 13 starts. Both wins have been on soft ground and he bears watching as he steps out in distance.
Super substitute
Hats off to the committee and groundstaff at Warracknabeal, the beneficiary of Donald’s transferred meeting last weekend.
The nine-race program capped off a busy period for the club, which had hosted 10 races and a set of official trials in the fortnight prior.
