Mature-age apprentice and reigning premier Adelaide jockey Rochelle Milnes ticked off another milestone last Saturday, losing her claim by riding her 80th city winner amid a double at Morphettville.
Milnes began her career as a senior rider at the same track on Wednesday, when her best result was a narrow second on Lakehurst ($11) for Balaklava trainer Kate Halliday.
Last Saturday she brought up her first winner when Michael Hickmott-trained last-start winner Rabtat, the $3.70 favourite, won a benchmark 62 handicap over 1800 metres.
Milnes completed her double on another favourite, Cicala ($2.05), for Sellicks Hill trainer Will Clarken in the 1200-metre benchmark 82.
The four-year-old mare now has four wins from five starts and is likely to appear next in next Wednesday’s listed 1600-metre Balaklava Cup.
Hickmott made it two wins for the day when $2.60 favourite Cash won the benchmark 64 over 1200 metres, completing a popular treble for jockey Todd Pannell.
Pannell brought up his first winner when the French-bred Paradise Storm ($3.80 favourite) swooped from the back half to win a benchmark 78 over 2500 metres for Ballarat trainer Henry Dwyer.
Pannell again pleased the punters when last-start winner Anthracite ($1.75 favourite) romped home by three lengths for Murray Bridge trainer Gary Boyce in the Class 2 handicap over 1600 metres.
Intellectual looks smart
Richard and Chantelle Jolly look to have a promising youngster in their stable following the debut win of Intellectual in a three-year-old maiden plate over 1050 metres at Morphettville.
A $260,000 purchase, Intellectual ($1.70) was the first of seven winning favourites on the nine-race card, leading all the way under Jake Toeroek.
Cigar smokes ’em
Local trainer Sue Murphy and jockey Teagan Voorham were the stars of last Sunday’s Naracoorte meeting with a double apiece.
Voorham scored on the Richard Wilson-trained Zoular ($3.40) in a maiden plate of 1100 metres while Murphy won a 1340-metre maiden with Zeb’s Glass ($31), ridden by Caitlin Jones.
Murphy and Voorham teamed up to complete their doubles with Johnny Cigar ($4.40), who took the Class 1 plate over 2000 metres by four lengths.
Beast mode
Four-kilo claimer Alyssa Webb notched her first city win when she scored on Easy Beast ($16) for Murray Bridge trainer Sophie Logan in the Sportsbet More Places Benchmark 56 Handicap (2037m) at Morphettville on Wednesday.
It was Webb’s fifth win overall from 98 rides since beginning her career on Anzac Day at Balaklava.
