Riding honours were shared at Devonport last Sunday with Anthony Darmanin, David Pires and Sam Kennedy each booting home a pair of winners.
Visiting Victorian apprentice Kennedy was first on the board, taking the maiden/Class 1 plate over 1650 metres on the Bradley Franklin-trained Purr Sefanee, who was able to lead throughout after crossing from a wide draw.
Her second victor, the Kelvin Hamilton-prepared Fast Thinker, also led from go to whoa in the final event on the card, a benchmark 64 handicap over the same trip.
Darmanin’s first success came via the Stuart Gandy-trained Final Approach, who finished off hard from midfield to take the maiden plate over 1350 metres.
He later combined with in-form trainer Barry Campbell to take the Class 1 handicap over 1150 metres with the heavily backed Hartman ($5-$2 favourite), who led before bolting in at his local debut.
Pires’s first win came via the stewards’ room as his mount, the Yassy Nishitani-prepared The Spirit Of Zero, was second across the line in the benchmark 76 handicap over 1350 metres. When the third-placed Asva protested successfully against winner Lovin’ Bev after being crowded for room in the home straight, Pires’s charge was promoted to first.
His second winner was the Leanne Gaffney-trained Cornelian Bay, who stormed home from the back for a dominant 3¼-length win in the benchmark 68 handicap over 1150 metres.
You go, Girl
Stuart Gandy’s promising filly Zany Girl will be out to make up for a luckless Victorian debut when she contests the $175,000 listed Jim Moloney Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on Saturday.
The daughter of Needs Further impressed defeating older rivals at Hobart first up from a break then never got clear air in the Atlantic Jewel at Moonee Valley second up.
Craig Williams sticks and she looks over the odds at the current quote of $15.
