Shogo Nakano followed a treble at Devonport the previous week with a double at that track last Sunday.
He opened his account on the Yassy Nishitani-prepared Specialized, who was untroubled leading all the way in the Class 1 handicap over 1350 metres.
Nakano later combined with Kelvin Hamilton, whose charge Fast Thinker also raced on pace before holding off the fast-finishing Tuskegee to notch a second successive win at healthy odds over the Devonport 1650 metres.
Anthony Darmanin and apprentice Jackson Radley shared the riding honours with Nakano, Radley taking the opening event on the card on the heavily backed Leanne Gaffney-trained Star Fortian ($1.85-$1.60), who led throughout to clear maiden ranks over 1009 metres first up from a six-month break.
The win was also the first leg of a double for Gaffney, who later took the benchmark 60 handicap over 1150 metres with Cornelian Bay, who scored a second successive win over that route with David Pires aboard on each occasion.
Radley went on to bookend the meeting, taking the last for his master, John Blacker, on lightly raced four-year-old Vino Novello, who finished strongly from the back to notch his second win at his third start in the maiden/Class 1 handicap over 1880 metres.
Darmanin’s first success came via the Michael Trinder-trained Opensea, who relished a strong tempo up front before notching a dominant 4½-length win in the maiden plate over 1650 metres.
The Ocean Park gelding is set to back up this Friday night in a maiden/Class 1 plate over 1600 metres, where he will again have the services of the state’s leading hoop.
Darmanin completed his Devonport double aboard Stuart Gandy’s promising filly Geegees Missile, who remains unbeaten after two runs this prep by scoring a strong on-pace win in the Class 1 handicap over 1150 metres.
Crack on
Stuart Gandy has several smart fillies in his yard and another of those, Crack The Shutters, looks the best bet on the card when Tasmanian racing returns to turf at Launceston on Friday night.
The daughter of Alpine Eagle draws wide but looked promising in her first prep and comfortably won a trial at Launnie on September 23, beating Geegees Missile by three lengths.
Gandy will also be hoping for success at Flemington on Saturday when Zany Girl tackles the $300,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes over 1600 metres.
The daughter of Needs Further never saw clear air in the Atlantic Jewel at her mainland debut before catching the eye hitting the line hard from the rear when out to 1400 metres in the Jim Moloney.
The rise to 1600m looks ideal for her now, Craig Williams sticks and she should be able to settle closer from the inside alley.
