SA: Flame has Gluyas on a classic trail again
By Peter Neall, October 20, 2025 - 6:30 PM

Trainer Andrew Gluyas has just about made the Hill Smith Stakes his own after Freedom Flame gave him his third straight win in the 1800-metre listed three-year-olds’ feature as part of a double at Morphettville last Saturday.
Freedom Flame ($31) came from third in running to break her maiden at her sixth start, scoring by a half-head from the Henry Dwyer-trained gelding Different Gravy ($10), with a gap to third.
Both first and second are by Dubawi stallion Ghaiyyath, a 2400-metre Group 1 winner in the Grosser Preis von Baden.
Freedom Flame, a half-sister to Group 2 winner and SA Derby runner-up Dalasan, may have her next start in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on Saturday week, a traditional VRC Oaks lead-up.
Goldrush Guru, who won the Hill Smith Stakes for Gluyas last year, went on to take the Victoria Derby.
Freedom Flame made it a double for stable apprentice Taylor Johnstone, who’d won the SkyCity 0-64 Handicap (1100m) on $2.70 favourite Murph for Murray Bridge trainer Paul Carey. Carey also bred and owns the four-year-old Magnus gelding.
Earlier, Gluyas had landed the first leg of his double with last-start winner and $1.85 favourite Guru Warrior in a benchmark 72 over 2006 metres. Guru Warrior was ridden by senior stable jockey Jason Holder.
Holder went on to complete a double of his own on Shady Thinker ($2.30 favourite), who scored first up for Gawler-based Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor in a 1200-metre benchmark 70.
Ben bounces back
After a run of outs, Ben Price took the riding honours last Saturday with a treble.
Two of Price’s winners were trained locally by Travis Doudle, starting with Golden Horizon ($4), who came three wide on the turn and ran on strongly under 60kg to win the Canadian Club Handicap, a benchmark 66 for three-year-olds.
Price and Doudle combined again with Wiggum ($7.50), who came from near last to win the 1050-metre benchmark 78.
Price completed his treble leading all the way on Sparkup ($51) in 0-68 grade over 1600 metres for Oakbank trainer Kirsten Mooney.
Kick home
There were joyous scenes in the mounting yard after Kick Your Knees Up ($21) broke through at her fifth start in the Thomas Farms Maiden Plate (1200m).
The four-year-old mare was the first Morphettville winner in 3½ years for Gawler co-trainers Kerrie McAnulty and Clint Binnie, and the first Morphettville winner in 2½ years for jockey Dylan Caboche.
Alysha on a roll
Apprentice Alysha Warren and Murray Bridge trainer Justin Pickering combined for a running double at Penola last Friday with Free Beer ($2.90) and Jilladora ($4.60).
Senior jockey Campbell Rawiller shared the riding honours, landing a running double of his own on Rippa Buddy ($3.60 favourite) and Space Equity ($3.80).
Bit of a coup
Apprentice Sophie Potter scored her biggest win so far when Bit Of A Rebel ($4.40) took last Sunday’s Mindarie Halidon Cup. Bit Of A Rebel is trained in the Inman Valley by Potter’s father, Justin, in partnership with David Jolly.
