Since relocating in July to the Murray Bridge stable of Justin Pickering, Alysha Warren has proved one of the most promising apprentices in SA, and she took another step at Morphettville last Saturday with her first city double.
Riding for her former master Danny O’Brien, the three-kilo claimer notched her first success on Grinzinger Champ ($12), who came from one off the pace to win the benchmark 68 handicap over 1100 metres.
The well bred filly (by Wootton Bassett from a daughter of Mackinnon Stakes winner Champagne) now has two wins, two thirds and $69,660 in earnings from four starts.
Warren completed her double on Thunder Shoc ($14) in the 1050-metre benchmark 64 for local trainer Will Clarken.
The double took Warren to 18 wins for the season, placing her seventh on the statewide SA premiership table.
Holder kicks
Clearly leading that SA premiership — and the Adelaide metro premiership — is Jason Holder, who maintained his cracking form with a double at last Saturday’s meeting.
Holder brought up his first winner when Guru Warrior ($1.50 favourite) completed a hat-trick in the benchmark 76 over 2028 metres.
Extending a purple patch for local trainer Andrew Gluyas, Guru Warrior raced on pace as usual before pulling clear to score by 2¾ lengths, taking his overall record to starts for four wins, two placings and $140,720. He is now likely to contest the benchmark 70 final of the Skybeau Series over 2500 metres at Morphettville on November 22.
Holder landed the second leg of his double when Mt Niseko ($5) led all the way in a benchmark 82 over 1100 metres for local trainer Chris Bieg.
Kayla clicks
Kayla Crowther kicked off a big weekend by causing a boilover at Morphettville for Telopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson on Mr George ($41) in 0-64 company over 1600 metres.
Crowther went on to take the honours at Naracoorte’s Sunday meeting with a treble, winning an 1100-metre maiden on the Jeff Searle-trained Layin’ Up ($1.40 favourite), a 1430-metre benchmark 68 on the Darryl Dodson-trained Hidden Beauty ($6) and a 1200-metre 0-54 on the Cameron Thompson trained Take Me To Church ($9).
Apprentice Alana Livesey rode two winners at Naracoorte, both prepared by Mount Gambier’s Dean Saxon. They were Ludo ($18) in a 1430-metre maiden and Cork Harbour ($16) in a benchmark 64 over the same trip.
Ludo’s win was nothing if not well earned. The six-year-old I Am Invincible gelding broke through at his 58th start.
Assault again
The Andrew Gluyas-trained five-year-old Air Assault made it two cup wins in a fortnight when he took out the listed John Letts Cup over 1800 metres at Morphettville on Tuesday. He’d taken out the 1500-metre Gawler Cup 11 days before.
Guided to victory by the in-form Jason Holder, Air Assault was no further back than fourth in running.
Jockey Campbell Rawiller was the star of Tuesday’s fixture with a double, winning on the Nicole Irwin-trained Youbeeforty ($12) in an 1800-metre maiden plate and Grinzinger Bishop ($21) for Kym Healy in an 1800-metre benchmark 64 handicap.
