Western Victoria: Big smoke beckons Dabernig duo
By Tim Auld, January 12, 2026 - 3:40 PM

In-form local trainer Tom Dabernig kept the winners rolling in at last Sunday’s Port Fairy Cup/Koroit Cup meeting at Warrnambool, taking the honours with a running treble on the eight-race card.
His winners were Gwen’s Girl ($1.70 favourite) in a 1000-metre maiden, Du Clisson ($1.65 favourite) in a benchmark 66 over the same trip and Hedonist ($5.50) in the benchmark 78 Port Fairy Cup (1400m).
Dabernig says restricted midweek city races may be next for Gwen’s Girl and Du Clisson.
“It’s probably the ideal time to head to Melbourne with them. They appear to have plenty of upside.”
Du Clisson has won three of her nine starts while Gwen’s Girl broke through at her fourth outing.
Dabernig’s treble made it six winners in 12 days for the stable since New Year’s Eve.
Smith eyes sprint
Multiple Group 1-winning trainer Lindsey Smith is aiming Contemporary at the Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool in May after the ex-Godolphin gelding’s third at cricket-score odds in last Saturday’s Group 3 Standish Handicap at Flemington.
“He’s only had the three runs for me (since transferring from James Cummings),” Smith said.
“I might give him one more run before setting him to run fresh in the Wangoom. He’s got a good fresh record and the Wangoom should really suit.”
Smith won the 2024 Wangoom with Group 1 winner Tuvalu.
Black-bookers
• Flying Done: nice winner at Flemington on Saturday for Warrnambool’s Matty Williams. He’s won three from six and more wins are in store for this lightly raced galloper.
• Ottelia: Pleasing debut run at Warrnambool last Sunday for Mount Gambier trainer Ricky Bruhn. She hit the line hard at the end of 1200 metres and appears to have a bright future.
Steady as she goes
Prizemoney for the 2026 Warrnambool May carnival looks likely to remain steady, despite the Warrnambool Racing Club seeking a stake lift.
Warrnambool Racing Club chief executive Luke Cann said he would love to see a hike in stakes but believes there will be no changes for the 2026 carnival.
The 2025 Warrnambool Cup carried prizemoney of $300,000 while the Grand Annual Steeplechase was a $350,000 race.
The 2026 Warrnambool May Carnival runs from May 5 to May 7.
