Geoff Daffy, who died in 2020, loved nothing more than leading in winners at the annual Camperdown Cup meeting. He won the Camperdown Cup on six occasions!
Last Saturday, Daffy’s race colours of white, green shamrock and sleeves plus gold cap were back in the winners’ stall at Camperdown after Almago, ridden by Jordyn Weatherley, defeated Mr Ribtickler in a maiden over 1600 metres.
Almago, who is trained by Michael Kent, is out of Daffy’s mare Rondalago and is raced by some members of his family.
Daffy’s son John said the win by Almago was a huge thrill for the family.
“Geoff would have been over the moon. We told Michael (Kent) when we gave him the horse 18 months ago it would be a great result if we could win a race at our home town cup meeting with Almago as she’s out of the last horse Geoff raced and trained.”
Two for Will
Will Gordon took the riding honours with a double at Camperdown. He was successful on Sakakibara for Symon Wilde and then scored on the Patrick Kearney-trained Royal Infantry.
On the same program, Mister Me, trained by Shane Jackson, took out the Camperdown Cup.
The seven-year-old won the same race back in 2024 when he was trained by Symon Wilde. From his 36 starts Mister Me has won seven and earnt more than $315,000 in stakemoney.
Warrnambool-based Tom Madden was the winning rider last Saturday.
Crowd pleases
Camperdown officials were delighted with crowd numbers for its annual meeting.
General Manager Karen Van Kempen said more than 2900 patrons attended.
“It was a really big crowd considering it was a very windy day,” Van Kempen said.
“We were up about 20% on last year’s figures.
Brotherly help
Ciaron Maher called on the services of his younger brother Declan to help win his third Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Maher, who won with Away Game in 2020 and Coolangatta in 2022, was successful with Unit Five last weekend.
Declan relocated his training operation to the Gold Coast in May last year after previously running Ciaron’s Ballarat stable.
“It’s great to have Declan up there,” the master trainer said. “I’ve been sending a few horses to him for a while now. Unit Five was one that was stabled with him.”
