Three-kilo claimer Jett Newman had a day to remember at Rosehill last Saturday.
The 17-year-old, who had never ridden at a metropolitan meeting before, had two rides, both for Murwillumbah–based Matthew Dunn (to whom she is indentured) — and both won!
The first win came aboard Considered in the 1400-metre Class 3 TAB Highway Hcp.
Newman settled the mare back in the field before charging home late to reel in the roughy Brooklyn Lights.
Newman’s second victory came in the 1300-metre Benchmark 88, on short-priced favourite Band Of Brothers who defeated Romeo’s Choice and Just Party.
The young rider sent Band Of Brothers straight to the front and judged the pace to perfection.
“He handled it in his stride,” Newman said. “He doesn’t have a sharp turn of foot but he stuck on well.”
Newman is the daughter of former champion Sydney apprentice Mitch Newman and Band Of Brothers was her 79th winner in her first year of race-riding.
“I’m so proud of her. She keeps learning,” her proud father said.
Solid win for Stone
Aroha Stone, trained at Newcastle by Nathan Doyle, relished the heavy track conditions at Rosehill and recorded a comfortable win over 1500 metres.
“She’s a very tough mare,” said stable representative Grace Willoughby. “We knew she would run well because she has a good third-up record.”
Multiple doubles ...
Trainer Ben Brisbourne notched a winning double at Tumut last Saturday, as did three-kilo claiming apprentice Cassidy Hill rode a winning double.
At the Tuncurry meeting on the same day, trainer Steve Hodge and jockey Serg Lisneyy both scored winning doubles.
A day earlier, at Ballina’s Showcase meeting, the Cup was won by the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained Hurstville Zageb, ridden by Damien Thornton. The winner scored by two-and-a-quarter lengths with Edited By and Rock Hard nabbing the minor placings.
Earlier on the program, the $50,000 Super Maiden (1000 metres) was won by three-year-old filly The Rookie, ridden by Yvette Lewis and trained by Gary Nielsen.
Dane claims Cup
Cowra hosted its major meeting of the year last Sunday. It was an eight-race program featuring the 1700-metre Cowra Cup, the 1200-metre Japan Cup and the $50,000 Super Maiden (1375 metres).
The Super Maiden was won by favourite Alabama Hussy who is trained by Nick Olive and was ridden by Zac Waddick.
The Japan Cup went to Daniel Nickson’s Zale, who started favourite and won easily, beating Acheson and Hellinda.
The Cowra Cup was taken out by Michael Mullholland’s Shadow Dane, ridden by apprentice Jacob Stiff. Mathrin finished second, beaten a half length, and Dynamic One was a neck away in third.
Port feature coming up
Port Macquarie hosts its $65,000 Queen of the North today (Friday). Tomorrow, the Deepwater Jockey Club will conduct its annual meeting. The feature race is the 1400-metre Deepwater Cup.
Grafton will host a $50,000 Super Maiden over 1200 metres on Sunday.
