Komachi may have booked a place in next month’s Adelaide Cup with his victory in the listed Premier’s Plate (2006m) at Morphettville last Saturday, giving trainer Will Clarken the first leg of a treble and Rochelle Milnes the second leg of her double.
Coming off a narrow second in the Strathalbyn Cup six days earlier, Komachi ($3.10 favourite) came from midfield with a late run to defeat Crimson Vine by half a length.
“We’ll look to push towards an Adelaide Cup,’’ Clarken said after the race
“The horse is in great form — I wonder if he’s peaked. We’ll find out in the Lord Reims.
“We’re going to have to go to another level (but) he’s got a great pedigree and a big engine.
“It was a really good ride from a sticky spot early,” he added.
Komachi, an Irish-bred son of Kingman, has had 46 starts for nine wins, earning $401,927.
The Group 3 Lord Reims (2600m) is on Saturday week (February 21), the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on Monday March 9.
Clarken made it a popular race-to-race double when Mic Drop ($2.40 favourite) took out a benchmark 78 over 1100 metres with Kayla Crowther aboard.
Four-year-old mare Thunder Shoc ($3.80 favourite) completed Clarken’s treble in the benchmark 68 over 1200 metres, racing for the first time since a win on the Parks track on December 27.
Todd Pannell was aboard for both wins.
Earlier, Milnes brought up the first leg of her double when Longer Route ($2.90 favourite) scored in 0-66 grade over 1800 metres for Murray Bridge trainer Mick Huxtable.
Jacob Opperman shared the riding honours with Milnes, scoring the first leg of his double when the impressive Phillip Stokes-trained filly Rebel Tuesday ($2.15 favourite) resumed with victory in a 1050-metre two-year-old handicap.
Opperman’s second winner also looks smart, World’s My Oyster ($1.75 favourite) winning a benchmark 78 over 1600 metres for Ballarat trainer Henry Dwyer.
World’s My Oyster ran on from better than midfield to bring up her second Morphettville win in seven days and her fifth win in six career starts.
Cash for cancer
Racing SA announced last Saturday that in conjunction with the Women in Sport event at Morphettville they would donate $500 to Australian Breast Cancer Research for every race won by a female jockey during the day, resulting in a $3000 donation after women rode six of the 10 winners.
Favourite-backers were the other big winners at Morphettville, with seven favourites and an equal favourite successful.
