Three-year-old filly Bassett Babe looks likely to play a starring part in the Adelaide autumn carnival after an impressive win on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Giving trainer Andrew Gluyas and his apprentice Taylor Johnstone the first leg of a double, Bassett Babe ($1.40 favourite) came with a strong late run to win the three-year-olds’ benchmark 72 over 1250 metres, improving her record to two wins from two starts.
The Wootton Bassett filly, who fetched $200,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale of 2024, is a half-sister to Thedoctoroflove, whom Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young trained to win last season’s Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and run second in the New Zealand Derby.
Another sibling is Ichibansan (see below).
Their dam is the Rebel Raider mare Khandallah, whom Gluyas and then-partner Leon Macdonald trained to win over 2050 metres at Strathalbyn and over 2038 metres at Morphettville.
Khandallah’s half-brother Dalasan was a high-class galloper for Gluyas and Macdonald for five seasons, so Guineas races and perhaps the Group 1 Australasian Oaks might prove to be within Bassett Babe’s scope through the second half of this season.
Gluyas and Johnstone completed their double when last-start Strathalbyn winner Tough Talk ($3.20 favourite) took out a Class 2 handicap over 1250 metres.
Brendon breaks through
It was a memorable day for Port Augusta trainer Brendon Davis, who brought up his first city winner when Over Yonder ($13) won in 0-62 grade over 1000 metres, giving Teagan Voorham her second winner for the day.
Voorham’s earlier winner was Bardigrub ($4.80) in a 1000-metre maiden plate for Richard and Chantelle Jolly.
Jake Toeroek was the other hoop to land a double at Morphettville Parks, securing the bookends.
Toeroek’s winner were High On Sugar ($3.10 favourite) in a benchmark 66 over 1250 metres for Wayne Francis and Glen Kent, and Streetcar Apollo ($6) in a 1400-metre benchmark 72 for David Jolly and Justin Potter.
Coorong for cup?
Murray Bridge co-trainers Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray are pondering next month’s Adelaide Cup after the win of Coorong Tycoon ($3.10 equal favourite) in 0-64 grade over 2250 metres.
Following that narrow win under Campbell Rawiller, the four-year-old Capitalist gelding is likely to tackle this Saturday’s Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes over 2600 metres as a trial for the 3200-metre Adelaide Cup 16 days later.
Sha shocks ’em, Healy happy
Strathalbyn trainer Kym Healy stunned punters at Clare last Sunday when he kicked off a double with Sha Na Na, ridden by Lauren Stojakovic, in an 1100-metre 0-56 for fillies and mares.
Combining with Campbell Rawiller, Healy completed his double when Mr Jones ($13) won over 1200 metres in 0-54 grade.
Jordsjo goes whoosh
Jockey Anna Jordsjo was the star of last Sunday’s non-TAB meeting at Lock.
Combining with Port Augusta trainer Kylie McKerlie, Jordsjo completed her double on Ichibansan ($13) in the benchmark 72 Lock Cup (1900m), third heat of the Eyre Peninsula Legends Series. Her first winner was the Simon Drewitt-trained Hawson ($6) in a benchmark 52 handicap of 1000 metres.
