Breakthrough black-type wins for two trainers highlighted last Saturday’s Morphettville meeting, a preview to Monday week’s Adelaide Cup day.
Murray Bridge trainer Sarah Rutten has her eyes on the cup itself after a narrow win to Eventually ($41) in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes over 2600 metres.
Rider Teagan Voorham came from midfield on Eventually to defeat Highland Bling in a tight photo, with another Rutten-trained runner, Crimson Vine, in third place.
Gawler-based Wayne Brown was the other to notch a surprise maiden stakes win, with Power Beau ($61) in the listed City of Marion Stakes over 1200 metres.
The win provided a welcome back to SA racing for jockey Will Price, who’d had stints in Victoria and NSW since taking the Lord Reims on Canford at this meeting last year.
The day’s other listed event ended in more familiar hands, the Phillip Stokes-trained Rebel Tuesday taking the Cinderella Stakes for two-year-old fillies over 1050 metres.
Coming off a first-up win over the same course, Rebel Tuesday was backed in from $2.05 to start a $1.85 favourite. Jacob Opperman rode her.
Mathematician too smart
Sellicks Hill trainer Will Clarken and leading jockey Jason Holder took the honours at the Morphettville meeting with a double apiece.
Clarken’s winners were Mathematician ($5) in a 1050-metre benchmark 64 for three-year-olds and Invertational ($15) in an open-age benchmark 64 over the same trip. Kayla Crowther and Caitlin Jones were the respective jockeys.
Holder scored on last-start winner Somewhere Soon ($2.70 favourite) for Andrew Gluyas in 0-66 grade over 1800 metres and on the resuming Super Lad ($8.50) for Chris Bieg in 0-70 company over 1200 metres.
Bieg made it a two-venue double 20 minutes later when apprentice Isaac Sit won a 1750-metre 0-56 handicap on Prancing Countess ($8) at Kangaroo Island.
Nic clicks at Kingscote
Murray Bridge trainer Nicole Irwin was one of the stars of last week’s Kangaroo Island carnival with three winners on the first day and one on the second.
Her Thursday winners were Redwinelover ($1.50 favourite) in a 1050-metre benchmark 62, Lastar ($3.50) in a 1215-metre benchmark 58 and Vee Rod ($2.60 favourite) in 0-54 grade over 1750 metres. Stacey Metcalfe, Kyra Yuill and Sophie Potter were the winning riders.
Her Saturday winner was Bel Hotesse ($1.60 favourite), who took the 1050-metre benchmark 58 with Potter aboard.
Irwin’s form was a bonus for the Angel Flight charity, to whom she’d pledged $100 for every carnival winner.
Victorian trainer Stephen Lenehan also got amongst it on day one at KI, but his double was less popular with punters. Friday Folly ($13) won a 1360-metre maiden plate before Shasam took the last, a benchmark 52 over the same trip, as a drifting $81 chance.
Thomas Doyle rode both winners for Horsham-based Lenehan.
Rebel reigns in KI Cup
Strathalbyn trainer Kym Healy was the star of day two at Kangaroo Island with three winners including the cup.
Lauren Stojakovic rode two of Healy’s winners — Starlite Rebel ($10) in the Kangaroo Island Cup (1800m) and Lucky Fortuna ($7.50) in a 1360-metre benchmark 58.
Healy’s other winner was Real Valentia ($4.40) in a 1215-metre benchmark 54 with apprentice Caitlyn Munro claiming two kilos.
That completed a riding double for Munro, who’d scored earlier on the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained $2.05 favourite Purfect Line in a benchmark 62 over 1215 metres.
Stojakovic kept up the good work at Balaklava the following day, winning on the Kate Brooks-trained Papal Wars ($8.50) in a 2200-metre Class 1 plate and on Elegant Lilly ($6) for Shane and Cassie Oxlade in a three-year-olds’ maiden over 1050 metres.
Stace stars first up
Better known as a harness and greyhound caller, Lachlan Stace looks to have a bright future at the gallops after calling his first full thoroughbred meetings at the Kangaroo Island carnival.
