Wimmera: Fisherman returns to hook KI punters
By Josh Miller, February 25, 2026 - 12:41 PM

Horsham trainer Stephen Lenehan rekindled his love affair with Kangaroo Island last week, training a winning double on the Thursday.
Five-year-old mare Friday Folly ($13) was the first to salute for Lenehan, taking out the 1360-metre maiden under Tommy Doyle in a tight finish.
Doyle took the daughter of Honorius to the front from the outside gate, pinching a break on the home bend and holding off fast-finishing odds-on favourite Mahaler ($1.45), who made a desperate lunge at the post.
The victory came at start 11 for Friday Folly, whose form had been modest before an improved effort at Murray Bridge the start prior.
Lenehan would leave punters in the foetal position after the final event of the day, his six-year-old mare Shasam ($81) pleasing only those who had an “F” on their Kingscote quaddie tickets.
Doyle was in the saddle again, this time settling last in a field of 10 and turning for home with the job ahead. Doyle railed hard on the corner and found a run through the field, arriving in time to take out the benchmark 52 contest from Knight Dancer ($5.50), who was just a nose away in second.
Lenehan entered KI folklore on 2023 when he trained a winning treble — at odds of around 13,480/1 — on what was otherwise just a fishing trip with mates.
Will power
Versatile jockey Will Gordon took riding honours at Horsham on Tuesday, securing a winning treble across the eight-race card.
He started the day brightly under highweight conditions, piloting Bill Cerchi’s $2.05 favourite Dirty Robber to victory in the opening event, a 2100-metre maiden.
Gordon gave his mount every chance from the Horsham Cup start, sitting third throughout and not panicking when the leader took off and tried to pinch a break a long way from home. Dirty Robber reeled that horse in and dropped off a late challenge from Gotcha Moment ($3.20) to score by 4½ lengths.
Gordon recorded a race-to-race double later on the card, teaming with Andrew Bobbin in race five to steer Khant Bee ($3.90) to victory, before joining forces with Cerchi again to get everything out of Diamond War ($10) in the sixth event, completing his winning treble.
