Speedy mare The Gov made a quick impression for new owner/trainer David Noonan when she sizzled to victory in the Woolamai Whirlwind over 888 metres last Saturday.
The eight-year-old daughter of Super One notched the ninth win of her career and her first since joining Noonan earlier in February. She crossed the border from South Australia after carving out a productive career over several seasons for Shayne and Chelsea Cahill then more recently Garret Lynch.
The Gov, who began her career in New Zealand winning one of five, was a multiple city winner for the Cahills before taking time to find winning form for Lynch, but winning three of her last four runs for the stable at Port Lincoln, Kingscote and Ceduna.
On Saturday she settled near the rear in the scamper, but on turning got a lovely run through the field for the cool and calm Jasmine Trenwith and was too strong in the straight, winning by 1½ lengths with Trenwith saluting enthusiastically.
2024 Whirlwind winner Doctor Coto, a 10-year-old having his 102nd start, ran second, with Reece Goodwin’s recent pick-up Struggle Street finishing third as a well fancied $1.80 favourite.
Dual joy for Jaymee
Pakenham trainer Jaymee Cockram bookended the Woolamai program to bring up her eighth and ninth winners from 102 starters.
Highland Reel mare Tartan Queen ($10)began well for rider Rowan Cox from the outside barrier of 10 to lead througout in the 1008-metre maiden to start the day.
Shamus Award gelding Up To Me ($15), who also drew 10, was managed differently by rider Ray Douglas, taken back to last and sweeping around the field from the 500m for an impressive four-length win.
Cockram has been training a small team off and on for more than a decade, her first win coming with the Rip Van Winkle gelding Malfum in a 1900-metre maiden at Traralgon in November 2016.
Understated too slick
This year’s Merton Cup winner, Understated, was back in winning form at Woolamai running slick time (a length off the track record) over the 2308 metres.
The 10-year-old Danesis gelding has won three races for the season and his Woolamai win kept the smile on trainer Peter Foster’s face after his D’Argento gelding Silver Lightning ran third at $101 at Cranbourne 24 hours earlier.
