Sparingly raced five-year-old Beneficiary continued his rapid rise through the grades by taking a Class 3 handicap over 1420 metres at Launceston on Wednesday night.
The Barry Campbell-trained gelded son of Justify faced the breeze under Chloe Wells before proving too strong for the fast-finishing Georgaroni, providing Wells with her first win as a senior hoop.
Beneficiary has now won four races from five starts and looked stiff when badly held up on the other occasion. Although the gelding is yet to race beyond 1400 metres Campbell is confident we’ll see the best of him over a staying trip.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night’s card, Stuart Gandy’s promising filly Momentslikethese notched an overdue win in the two-year-olds’ maiden plate over 1120 metres after enjoying a nice trail just off the speed under Craig Newitt.
The Tiger Of Malay filly had been game in the placings behind boom galloper Aristopolos at all four of her previous outings.
The win was the first leg of a double for Gandy and Newitt, who also took the benchmark 68 handicap over 1220 metres with in-form mare Golden Meadow.
In similar fashion to her victory on Launceston Cup day, the daughter of Wordsmith camped off the speed before launching late to make it back-to-back wins.
Leading apprentice Jabez Johnstone also notched a brace of wins, kicking off with the Narelle Webberley-prepared Woolclasser, who proved too strong despite facing the breeze in the maiden plate over 1220 metres.
Johnstone later guided the Siggy Carr-trained Artillery Fire to success in the Class 1 handicap over the same trip.
Hobby trainer Leon Laskey provided the upset of the night when Tideford ($18) led throughout under Mehmet Ulucinar in the maiden/Class 1 plate over 2150 metres.
The Tivaci gelding took 29 runs to break his duck but has now won two of his past three outings, leading from go to whoa on each occasion.
