SA: Machine kicks into gear on a Golden day
By Peter Neall, March 23, 2026 - 1:45 PM

A huge day for the Victorian stable of Mick Price and Michael Kent junior kicked off with a bang at Morphettville last Saturday, with first-starter and $2 favourite The Speed Machine ($2) leading all the way under Jason Holder in the 1000-metre two-year-olds’ handicap.
The win was the first leg of a double for the Price/Kent team, who scored three races later with Bring Forth ($3) in a 2294-metre benchmark 78. Jacob Opperman was the rider.
That Adelaide double was merely the entrée for Price and Kent, who would go on to snare their first Golden Slipper with Guest House at Rosehill.
Back at Morphettville, Holder completed a double of his own when the Andrew Gluyas-trained Omaha Dawn ($10) scored a first-up win in a benchmark 62 handicap over 1000 metres.
That win stretched Holder’s Adelaide premiership lead over Opperman to four.
The Pudding drought is over
Jake Toeroek shared the honours with Holder at the Parks meeting, landing the first leg of his double when Pudding ($10) resumed with a narrow win in a 1400-metre benchmark 86 for the father-daughter stable of Richard and Chantelle Jolly.
It was the 10th win of Pudding’s 45-start career but his first since a benchmark 100 victory over 1800m at Sandown in May 2024. He had 18 starts in the interim for six minor placings including five in a row to conclude his 2025 spring campaign.
Toeroek completed his double when Streetcar Apollo ($8) took out a benchmark 72 over 1250 metres. Trained out of the Inman Valley base of David Jolly and Justin Potter, Streetcar Apollo came with a strong run over the concluding stages.
City strikes for Steph
The Parks meeting proved a red-letter day for young Murray Bridge trainer Stephanie Lacy, who brought up her first metropolitan winner when City Pro ($2.60 favourite) took out a 1250-metre maiden plate.
Guided to victory by Todd Pannell, City Pro came into the race on the home bend before going on to record a strong half-length win.
Family day
Father-son combos were the flavour of the day at Mount Gambier last Sunday but the feature Millicent Cup (2050m) went to Victorian raider Unseen Ruler ($2.70 favourite), trained at Warrnambool by Matty Williams and ridden by Jack Hill.
Earlier, the father-son team of trainer Jamie and rider Jacob Opperman brought up their first win when Youraway ($4.80) won in 0-56 grade over 900 metres.
The Oppermans completed their double when Elliotto ($4.40 favourite) won a 1550-metre benchmark 56 heat of the Provincial Pathways Series.
The local father-son stable of Bob and Kane Post landed the first leg of their double when Whathappensinvegas ($14) took out a 900-metre maiden handicap under Luke Williams.
The Posts were again in the winner’s circle when apprentice Brooke King steered Nudge ’Em Along ($4.80) to victory in a 1200-metre 0-54 handicap.
A clean sweep, if not for Shakespeare
The most remarkable feat on an SA racetrack last weekend came at Saturday’s Streaky Bay non-TAB, where Murray Bridge trainer Garret Lynch and apprentice Tala Hutchinson combined to win five of the six races.
Their winners were Princess Now ($1.90 favourite) in a 1000-metre maiden, Rideau ($2.30 favourite) in a 1000-metre benchmark 62, Lady Memphis ($3.70) in a 1200-metre benchmark 54, Holder Maid ($3.50 favourite) in a 1350-metre benchmark 62 and Fox Dunnett ($5.50) in 0-54 grade over 1800 metres.
Richard and Chantelle Jolly spoiled the party, landing the 1800-metre Streaky Bay Cup with $2 favourite Shakespeare, ridden by Caitlyn Munro. Lynch and Hutchinson had to settle for third in that race, beaten almost seven lengths, with Explicable.
The highlight of last Saturday’s non-TAB meeting at Streaky Bay was when trainer Garret Lynch and apprentice Tala Hutchinson teamed up to win five of the six races.
