Two fillies and a mare emerged from last Saturday’s Morphettville meeting with their prospects looking bright for higher honours this autumn.
Stung may hold the key to Anzac Day’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks after her win in the listed Clare Lindop Stakes (1600m).
Prepared by Ben Will and J.D. Hayes, Stung ($6) came from midfield under Luke Currie to improve her career record to three wins from four starts.
Earlier, last-start SA Magic Millions-winning mare Shadhavar ($2.35 favourite) led all the way in the listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) for Warrnambool trainer Tom Dabernig and local jockey Jacob Opperman.
The Pride Of Dubai mare, who was second up last Saturday, has three wins and two seconds from her past five starts.
Another of Saturday’s winners with bright prospects is the Byron Cozamanis-trained two-year-old Never Ordinary, who gave her backers little cause for concern leading all the way in the listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) as $1.40 favourite under Rochelle Milnes.
Never Ordinary has won twice since a narrow debut second in February’s listed Cinderella Stakes.
Her latest win completed a running double for Milnes, who’d taken the previous, a 1050-metre benchmark 72, on Signature Scent ($2.60 favourite) for Ciaron Maher.
Jake Toeroek shared the riding honours with Milnes at Morphettville, winning a 1600-metre benchmark 76 for Richard and Chantelle Jolly on Mostly For Show ($5.50) and an 1100-metre benchmark 70 on High On Sugar ($17) for Strathalbyn-based Wayne Francis and Glen Kent.
Count on Cash
Another up-and-comer with black-type ambitions to win at Morphettville last Saturday was lightly raced four-year-old Cash in the 1600-metre benchmark 82 handicap.
Ridden by Adelaide Cup-winning jockey Jett Stanley and trained at Wellington by Michael Hickmott, Cash ($3) emerged from midfield to dash away for a four-length win.
Cash will likely head next to the listed City of Adelaide Handicap at Morphettville on Saturday week.
Dynamic duo strike again
Trainer Garret Lynch and apprentice Tala Hutchinson kept up the good work (after five wins from six races run at Streaky Bay the previous weekend) by winning back-to-back races at Port Lincoln last Sunday.
Their winners were The Last Dance ($2.50 favourite) in a 1750-metre 0-56 handicap and Sports Choice ($4.60) in a 1000-metre Class 2 handicap.
Oakbank-based co-trainers John Dunn and Krystal Bishop also won back-to-back races, Setteveli ($5.50) taking a 1210-metre benchmark 60 and Cullen Skink ($26) a 1350-metre 0-54 handicap. Rochelle Milnes and Ashvin Goindasamy were the riders.
The Port Lincoln meeting was the club’s last for its season, with the Sunday circuit moving north to Port Augusta on April 12.
Action aplenty
Easter is always a huge weekend for racing in SA, and this year is no exception, with the Oakbank Racing Club celebrating 150 years at the Adelaide Hills course, with meetings on Saturday and Monday.
The Clare Valley Racing Club holds its traditional Easter meeting on Saturday, while Sunday is cup day at Penola, with the feature over 1600 metres.
