SA: Cup dream alive for derby winner
By Peter Neall, May 4, 2026 - 1:22 PM

Kiwi-bred gelding Wigmore raced himself into SA racing history when he took out the 2518-metre South Australian Derby at Morphettville last Saturday.
Wigmore’s win made it two straight SA Derbies for trainer Phillip Stokes, who won the Group 1 classic last year with Femminile. Femminile raced in the colours of prominent syndicator OTI Racing, as does Wigmore
Wigmore is Stokes’s ninth Group 1 winner overall, and the second for jockey Teo Nugent, whose previous win at the top level came via a dead heat in the 2021 Oakleigh Plate.
Wigmore ($41) raced in a forward position throughout the Derby before coming with a late, wide run in the straight to grab gutsy VRC Oaks winner Strictly Business in the last stride, thus denying jockey John Allen a fifth SA Derby win.
Pakenham-based Stokes thanked his Adelaide team for their preparation of Wigmore in his week at Morphettville.
“He hadn’t raced for eight weeks going into the Chairman’s (the previous Saturday),” Stoke said. “He took good improvement and obviously relished the wet track.”
Stokes believes the son of Sweynesse could be a Melbourne Cup candidate in the coming spring, aiming for a double last completed by Subzero in 1992.
Tori too good
Trainer Andrew Gluyas was well pleased with the barnstorming win of Tiptop Tori ($18) in the listed Sir John Morphett Adelaide Guineas (1600m) earlier on the derby card.
Owned by Harry Perks and guided to victory by Jason Holder, Tiptop Tori flew home for an impressive one-length victory.
Holder called Tiptop Tori “a nice filly”.
Wild about Harry
Murray Bridge trainer Garret Lynch landed his first black-type success when Alainge ($15) took out last Saturday’s listed Port Adelaide Cup over 2518 metres.
Giving ex-Victorian jockey Harry Grace the first leg of a double, Alainge came from a midfield position with a strong run over the concluding stages to beat Sir Kingsford and $2.45 favourite Sea What I See.
“It was a great ride by Harry,” Lynch said. “I’ve been trying to get him (Harry) over for five years.”
Grace completed his double when Dobbinair ($9) won the Festival State Sprint Series final, a benchmark 76 over 1200 metres, for the Strathalbyn stable of Shayne and Chelsea Cahill.
A couple for Campbell
Campbell Rawiller took the points at last Friday’s Bordertown meeting with a popular riding double, scoring on the James and Lisa Dodgson-trained Rhinestone Rory ($2.40 favorite) in a 1550-metre maiden plate and the Travis Doudle trained See Ya Later Baby ($3.90 favourite) in a 1300-metre benchmark 58.
