Hardly a city meeting goes in South Australia where apprentice Alysha Warren isn’t on the winners list or at least in the placings, and she was at it again last Saturday with a Morphettville double.
From the Victorian coastal town of Barwon Heads and originally apprenticed to Flemington’s Danny O’Brien, Warren was recruited to SA early in 2025 by Murray Bridge trainer Justin Pickering.
Following last Saturday’s double she was ninth on the Adelaide premiership with 19 wins and sixth on the statewide table with 54.
Warren’s winners last Saturday were Sir Now ($2.50 favourite) in a 1050-metre benchmark 78 for Murray Bridge trainer Darryl Hewitt and Sir Leapalot ($11) in 0-64 class over 1100 metres for Strathalbyn’s Ryan Hannemamn.
Bubbles’s boy breaks through
Jon O’Connor looks to have a handy prospect on his hands after the first-up win of Neveu ($5-$4.60) in a benchmark 64 for two-year-olds at Morphettville.
With Andrew Stead aboard, the Rich Enuff gelding came from worse than midfield for a decisive 1¼-length win.
O’Connor should know the family well, having trained Neveu’s dam, Bubbles McGinty, for a Gawler win in 2021.
Sassy all the way
Murray Bridge trainer Jessica Tzaferis was delighted with the all-the-way win of Our Sassy Lady ($12) in a benchmark 72 over 1800 metres at Morphettville, perfectly rated by Teagan Voorham.
In related news, former racing.com presenter James Tzaferis, Jessica’s husband, has been appointed secretary/manager of the Murray Bridge Racing Club. Tzaferis replaces the long-serving John Buhagiar, who has announced his retirement.
Doudle does it again
It seems punters could do worse than to follow Morphettville trainer Travis Doudle when the club’s annual Cystic Fibrosis Race Day rolls around.
The win of $3.70 favourite Golden Horizon in last Saturday’s Class 2 Cystic Fibrosis Race Day Event Handicap (1200m) was a special one for Doudle, whose wife Emmah has the condition.
The three-year-old Sebring Sun gelding came from the back of the field at the 500-metre mark, plough through the soft 7 surface for a half-length win.
Golden Horizon won the two-year-olds’ benchmark 64 at his second start on Cystic Fibrosis Race Day 2025 as a $13 chance.
Connor Murtagh was his jockey in both wins.
Shep on a roll
Geelong trainer Michael Shepherdson won his second SA metro race in seven days when Nicajon ($6) scored in 0-64 company over 1600 metres. Ridden by former SA boy Joe Bowditch, the 11-year-old Nicajon came from near last position with a strong run late.
Shepherdson’s winner the previous Saturday was My Zephyr at Murray Bridge. Nicajon’s win made it four winners in the space of five starters for Shepherdson, whose other recent successes came via Ghetto Supastar at Flemington and Varadero at Bendigo.
Chloe claims cup
Trainer Garret Lynch and jockey Stacey Metcalfe took the points with a back-to-back double at Hawker’s non-TAB meeting last Saturday, taking the Toyota Hawker Cup (1750m) with Carashan Chloe ($5) and an 1100-metre benchmark 58 with Lady Memphis ($4.60).
Congratulations too to Morphettville-based Matthew Barkla, who trained his first winner when Valor Bound ($7) took a 1400-metre maiden plate at Hawker under Wesley Cave.
