Central Victoria: Tomanado worth the trip
By Mary Hackshaw, June 15, 2026 - 11:24 AM

The four-hour trip from Seymour to Narrandera on Saturday proved fruitful for Seymour trainer Don Dwyer on Saturday, with his charge Tomanado ($7) cruising to an easy 2¼-length win in the hands of Sairyn Fawke.
With a Victorian rating of 47, Tomanado has struggled to get a start and the splitting of the 1200-metre benchmark 50 gave the horse the opportunity he was looking for after almost a month between runs.
After a delay of several minutes while kangaroos were cleared from the track, Tomanado jumped slightly flat-footed but settled midfield on the rails. Once a gap opened on the run home the horse took the gap and cruised to the line unchallenged.
Dwyer takes a slightly unconventional approach to training his horses, putting them all out on 30 acres during the daytime and only bringing them in at night.
Dwyer was an eight-time Group 1-winning harness racing trainer in New Zealand after having been an apprentice jockey in his younger days and later working in the stable of Trevor McKee, trainer of the legendary Sunline.

Sunday’s Wangaratta meeting presented plenty of opportunities for Central Victorian trainers and local Craig Weeding got the ball rolling in race one, the 1000-metre maiden, with Induction ($26).
The horse won by an easy 4¼ lengths under Jake Duffy, following third placings in his previous two starts.
Seymour’s Hanna Powell took out race three, the 1590-metre maiden, with lightly raced four-year-old gelding Spietata ($12) completing a Duffy double.
Spietata is bred on the legendary High Chaparral-Zabeel cross, an indication that he will only improve as he goes over more ground. The heavy 10 track at Wangaratta would certainly have given him an early test of stamina.
Dan McCarthy’s charge Star Blazer ($9.50) took out race five, the benchmark 62 over 2000 metres, under a 62kg impost with Brodie Loy aboard.
Another local, the Ben Brisbourne-trained Tel Aviv, took out the next race, a 1590-metre benchmark 62, winning by a comfortable 3¾ lengths under Eoin Walsh.
