SA: This Sinner has been a revelation

Followers of Paula Trenwith had a big day at Morphettville last Saturday when the local trainer combined with apprentice Caitlin Tootell for a well priced double.
Trenwith and Tootell have formed a potent combination in the last year, with five winners — all in town — from their past 21 starters together.
Four of those five wins have come from four-year-old Castelvecchio gelding Ginger Sinner, who came from well back with a strong run to take last Saturday’s benchmark 80 over 1200 metres at a starting price of $8.50.
Trenwith bought Ginger Sinner on behalf of his current connections for $15,000 after five starts for the stable of Richard and Chantelle Jolly. The chestnut has since won five from 14 and $203,450.
Tootell and Trenwith completed their double when Babayka ($12) came from better than midfield to win a benchmark 64 over 1050 metres.
Babayka, a seven-year-old son of Mikki Isle, began his career with Scone trainer Brett Cavanough. He’s been with Trenwith since early 2024 for five wins — one each at the Kangaroo Island carnivals of 2024 and 2025, one at Morphettville Parks in September 2024, one at Balaklava last month and last Saturday’s success.
The double was Trenwith’s first at metro level.
Mansiere makes it up to the Maunds
The runner-up to Babayka in his 2024 city win was Mansiere, and that horse provided the boilover of the meeting last Saturday when he took the 1100-metre Class 2 at a starting price of $81 for Wistow trainer Karen Letts-Maund.
Originally trained at Flemington by Nick Ryan, Mansiere was having his second start for Letts-Maund since transferring from the Victorian stable of Craig Widdison.
Last Saturday’s heavy 10 surface no doubt helped — all three of Mansiere’s win have come on heavy tracks — but his first-up 12th of 13, beaten seven lengths, had also come on heavy.
Letts-Maund bought Mansiere online last November for $5500. He earned $30,000 for last Saturday’s win, but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.
The Brave Smash gelding recently hospitalised Letts-Maund’s husband, former race jockey Jeff Maund, by “double-barrelling” him after a trackwork mishap, breaking five ribs.
Mansiere’s win was the first leg of a riding double for Brooke King, who shared the honours with her fellow apprentice Caitlin Tootell.
King landed the second leg of her double when Sir Leapalot ($10) came from well back to win in 0-68 grade over 1200 metres for Strathalbyn trainer Ryan Hannemann.
Dunnett does it again
Stacey Metcalfe fared best of the jockeys at Port Augusta last Sunday, notching a double via the Larry McMahon-trained Conjoin ($4.40) in a 1200-metre maiden plate and the Garret Lynch-trained Costless ($7.50) in an 1100-metre benchmark 62.
Lynch completed a double of his own 40 minutes later, taking the benchmark 72 Squatters Cup (1867m) with last-start Port winner Fox Dunnett.
Three-kilo claiming apprentice Jemme Gutte has been aboard for both Fox Dunnett’s recent wins.
