Victorian runners ran the opposition ragged in two of the seven races at Wagga last Sunday, revelling in the heavy 10 conditions.
In race two, the Short’n’Sharp Welding Class 1 & Maiden Plate (1600m), Wangaratta’s Andrew Dale was successful with five-year-old mare Soho Princess ($51), who scored by 3¼ lengths in the hands of Zoe Waller. It had been a long time between drinks for the mare, who’d won her maiden in March 2025, trained by Pat Carey and Harris Walker.
Waller jumped the mare in a handy spot and kept in touch with the leaders before clearing out to win comfortably.
A race later Wodonga’s Craig Widdison struck with three-year-old filly and $3.60 favourite Justenuffsplash in benchmark 58 company over 1000 metres.
Ridden by Quayde Krogh, this filly too settled just off the pace before striding to an easy 4¼-length win.
Krogh has ridden the filly in both her wins. Overall the daughter of Rich Enuff has had six starts for two wins and a third.
Triumvirate triumphant
Ben, Will and J.D. Hayes of Euroa could have a good one on their hands following the maiden win of Triumvirate at the recent Caulfield Heath midweeker.
The exciting three-year-old Royal Meeting gelding is aptly named for a member of the brothers’ stable but began his racing career with John O’Shea and Tom Charlton in Sydney, running eighth of nine at his only two-year-old start.
Since transferring to the Hayes stable Triumvirate has clearly shown plenty, running favourite four times in six starts for two thirds, three seconds and now a win, amassing more than $62,000 in stakes along the way.
Ridden by Craig Williams, the gelding came from well behind the pace to score easily by 3¾ lengths over 1500 metres at the Heath, his first try beyond 1412 metres.
Triumvirate’s sire, Group 1-winning miler Royal Meeting, stands at Lovatsville in Northwood, Central Victoria.
His dam, Westport, was a listed winner at two over 1600 metres at Morphettville, trained by former Lindsay Park foreman Tony McEvoy.
