SA: Pretty unruly, but Cait takes plate
By Peter Neall, June 29, 2026 - 2:06 PM

Rising-star apprentice Caitlin Tootell passed another milestone last Saturday, scoring her first black-type win on Pretty Baby in the listed David Peacock Oaklands Plate for two-year-olds on the Morphettville Parks track.
Tootell brought the Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle-trained Pretty Baby ($10) from midfield for a half-length win, breaking her maiden at start number four.
But Tootell had to earn her black-type breakthrough, with the striking grey-brown Barbados filly not on her best behaviour.
“She still did a lot wrong today,” Tootell said. “She gave me hell going to the barriers … She’s all over the place, but she’s obviously got the ability there.”
Canny cuts corner
Mildura trainer Raharna McDonald was another to notch a milestone at the Parks meeting, chalking up her first metro win with Canny Defense ($15) in a 1568-metre Class 2.
Canny Defense settled midfield before taking advantage of a rails run under Stacey Metcalfe to score by half a length.
The five-year-old was backing up from a second over 1500 metres at Morphettville the Saturday before.
King cuts claim
Apprentice Brooke King followed up her double on the main track a week earlier with a win at the Parks meeting on Nicish, giving trainer Phillip Stokes the first leg of a double.
Nicish ($6.50) came from worse than midfield to take out the 1250-metre benchmark 66, giving 19-year-old King her 20th metropolitan win and reducing her city claim to two kilos.
Stokes brought up the second leg of his double when Falanghina ($12) swooped from the back to score in 0-64 company over 1400 metres, completing a double for jockey Harry Grace.
Grace had won earlier on Stirrup Cup ($4) in a 1973-metre benchmark 78 for Murray Bridge trainer Sarah Rutten, bringing the chestnut from midfield with a strong run to grab Danny O’Brien’s $2.50 favourite Hot Too Go in the shadows of the post.
Now and again
Murray Bridge trainer Darryl Hewitt kept up his good run when Snoopy Now ($4.40) won a benchmark 78 over 1568 metres at the Parks meeting, guided to victory by apprentice Taylor Johnstone.
Johnstone’s win came minutes before her brother Jabez rode the Ciaron Maher-trained filly Afterberna ($4.60) to victory over 1200 metres at Caulfield.
Snoopy Now’s win was Hewitt’s third at metro level in four weeks, with Sir Now scoring at Morphettville on May 30 and Murray Bridge on June 13.
Doudle double
Nangkita trainer Travis Doudle took the honours at Balaklava last Friday with a back-to-back double — The Cosmic One ($3.40 favourite) in a Class 1 over 1200 metres and Tahnee Territory ($4.20) in a 1200-metre benchmark 56. Ben Price and Kayla Crowther were the winning riders.
Doudle had another winner at Bordertown on Sunday with Theodor ($6.50) in a 2000-metre benchmark 58, completing a double for jockey Dom Tourneur.
Tourneur had won earlier on the John Macmillan-trained I Love This Song ($9) in a 1550-metre benchmark 56.
