Wet weather disrupted last week’s meetings, with Friday’s scheduled meeting at Warracknabeal transferred to the Ballarat synthetic track — unusually due to flooding in the tie-up and pre-parade areas rather than problems with the track.
Seymour trainer Don Dwyer had aimed last-start Narrandera winner Tomanado at the benchmark 52 Sportsbet Same Race Multi over 1200 metres, and the transfer was a worry.
Two of Tomanado’s three wins at the professionals had come on soft 7 and heavy 10 tracks, and he’d never encountered a synthetic track in his 30-start career.
Dwyer needn’t have worried, with Tomanado ($4.20) racing midfield for jockey Ryan Hurdle before romping home for an easy 2¼-length win.
The Toronado gelding will now have more options open to him with a higher rating, and the five-year-old should now be able to race more regularly, having now won on all track conditions from good to heavy and on synthetic.
Interestingly, Tomanado’s half-sister Elite Gathering (by Royal Meeting) won two days later on the dirt at Sunday’s Port Augusta meeting, leading all the way for her maiden win.
Both horses were bred by Mangalore Park near Seymour, out of the Danzero mare Penthesilea. The mare’s other runners are both three-time winners: Tswalu (by Northern Meteor) and Mister Hay Zee (by Toorak Toff),
