SA: Holder tightens grip, Hart gladdens hearts

Jason Holder extended his unassailable lead in the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership to 12 when he was one of four jockeys to ride a double at last Saturday’s Murray Bridge metro meeting.
Holder came from midfield to score on Petit Eagle ($5.50) in an 1800-metre benchmark 62 for local trainer Sarah Rutten, then swooped from the back on the Phillip Stokes-trained Brave Star ($7.50) in 0-68 grade over 1600 metres.
The double took Holder to 45 SA metro wins for 2025/26, 12 clear of Todd Pannell and Jacon Opperman with five meetings remaining.
Teagan Voorham kicked off her double at the Bridge with the most emotional win of the day, on Tully Hart ($21) in a two-year-olds’ benchmark 66 over 1200 metres.
Tully Hart, who came from midfield to break her maiden at start number four, is the first winner to have been bred by local trainer Jessica Tzaferis and husband James.
The Royal Meeting filly nearly died at birth, then required two weeks of intensive care.
“We’ve always loved her, we’ve always had a soft spot,” said James Tzaferis. “You probably saw that when Jess was tearing up 100m from home.”
Tzaferis thanked part-owner and stable employee Emily Murray, whose actions in the early hours of Tully Hart’s life saved the filly.
The second leg of Voorham’s double was an all-the-way win on Irish-bred import Placo ($4.80 favourite) in benchmark 74 company over 1800 metres for Morphettville trainer Luke O’Connor.
Connor Murtagh, who recently returned from an overseas holiday with partner and fellow jockey Rochelle Milnes, brought up the first leg of his bookend double when Bel Ragazzo ($5.50) won a 1200-metre maiden plate.
Prepared at the Inman Valley property of David Jolly and Justin Potter, Bel Ragazzo began well and maintained a forward position.
Murtagh won the last, an 1100-metre benchmark 64, on Rich D’amour ($4.60) for local trainer Roslyn Day.
Apprentice Tala Hutchinson was the other rider to double up. Both her winners started $1.60 favourite for the local stable of Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray — Orlova in a three-year-olds’ benchmark 70 over 1800 metres and Like A Drifter in a benchmark 80 over 1200 metres.
Favourite grabs Port cup — just
Murray Bridge trainer Garret Lynch and jockey Stacey Metcalfe were the toast of Port Augusta last Sunday after a running double capped by $3.60 favourite Romans Luck in the Port Augusta Cup.
While many punters were no doubt relieved, the favourite did ruin what would have been a fairytale for local hope Overloaded ($21). The ex-Victorian led the 2300-metre event until the shadows of the post under apprentice Alyssa Webb, at his first start for trainer Brendon Davis.
Lynch and Metcalfe brought up the first leg of their double with Poetic Whisper ($7) in 0-54 grade over 1600 metres.
Metcalfe shared riding honours on the day with Margaret Collett, who scored a running double of her own for Gawler stables earlier in the day.
She won a 1396-metre maiden on Elite Gathering ($4.80) for Andrew Beswick and an 1100-metre maiden for Darren and Aimee Magro on Belle Montagne ($1.85 favourite).
The Port Augusta Racing Club was well pleased with an estimated crowd of 7000 for its showpiece event. Port Augusta races again on Sunday week (July 19), with its season finale on Sunday August 23.
